Games requiring persistent internet connections very rarely goes does well with the massive, with the backlash against recent examples like Redfall and Gran Turismo 7 having served as reminders of just that. It is, however, a trend that’s not going away anytime soon, and another major upcoming game has also been confirmed as an always-online title.

Turn 10 Studios has confirmed that Forza Motorsport will require a persistent internet connection. During a recent Forza Monthly stream, creative director Chris Esaki revealed that though there will be some aspects of the game that players will be able to access while offline, like Free Play, by and large, the game will require a persistent internet connection. Anything tied to progression in the game will be stored on Turn 10 server’s- which includes the single player campaign, dubbed the Builders Cup.

“The game has been designed to easily adjust and add new content over time, and that’s really to ensure a fair and secure experience anywhere in the game,” Esaki said. “Any progression in the game will be stored on our servers to support the integrity of the overall game experience. And there are options to play offline, so things like Free Play are always available. But any progression requires an online connection.”

The Builders Cup is being billed as an evolving and changing experience that will consistently provide players with new content, with new tracks and cars being added directly to the career mode in a first for the series. The mode will also make improvements to Drivatars that will track and reflect all of the customization changes being made by the players they represent, which is another element of the experience that demands constant connectivity.

Whether Turn 10 Studios has plans to offer workarounds for this via post launch updates remains to be seen, but for now, the developer hasn’t indicated that it has any plans to that effect.

Forza Motorsport launches on October 10 for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
