In case you missed it, the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) wrapped up it’s stop in beautiful Barcelona and it was nothing short of a success. Now the EPT is setting it’s sights on sunny Cyprus as its next stop in the tour on October 11-22, 2023. With that in mind, Gent’s Post got the chance to chat with Canadian pro Parker Talbot about all things poker and why Canada needs to be taken more seriously.

Poker in Canada

Poker is a global phenomenon that brings out celebrities, pros and amateurs together. It’s reach is widespread and is increasingly growing in popularity. Canadians are increasingly interested in taking up poker both leisurely and professionally. But there are some challenges to growing the game in the great white north. So what would a Canadian pro want to see for this game? “NAPT [North American Poker Tour] in Canada! It would be so incredible to get some reputable poker tournament stops in Canada where people will actually travel here for, instead of Canadians against Canadians only.”

Parker Talbot

In order to improve scalability of the game across the country, there will need to be more tournaments held and more lights shined on some of the best and brightest being cranked out of the poker mill. Talbot notes in order for that to happen, there would need to be “more respect from the world as a sport and just more visibility presumably, feel like that’s always the key!”

Career Moments

With every EPT tournament, there is an opportunity make a career. To become a household name. To earn your spot amongst the legends. So when it comes to playing in the EPT, each player has a unique perspective on it. “EPT Barcelona is always a super exciting stop for me. It’s my second-favourite after Prague and it’s always such a good time,” notes Talbot. “Especially as I become an old man and enjoy the beach more and more.”

So for anyone looking to start their journey and compete in one of the many tournaments put on by PokerStars, Talbot has some strategic advice. “My advice is always the same, make some kind of plan: 90% play, 10% study and just GRIND!” he notes. “Just put your head down and truck on as long as you can. Playing lots and getting a feel for the landscape of the game is really the most important thing in poker, in my humble opinion.”

Next Stop

EPT Cyprus kicks off October 11-22, 2023 and that will be followed by EPT Prague December 6-17, 2023. EPT Cyprus takes place at the stunning Merit Royal Diamond Hotel Casino & Spa, a 5-star resort on the island’s north coast, boasting a new poker venue that only opened last year. The festival begins with Eureka Poker Tour events before bumping up the buy-ins and prestige for the EPT. For all the latest on tournaments and opportunities, check out PokerStars.

Global poker brand, PokerStars, launches unique 4-part YouTube series titled ‘Between the Lines’. The series is part of an initiative to pull the curtain back for fans of Oracle Red Bull Racing and gives them exclusive access to interviews and behind the scenes looks at the intersection of poker and racing.

Between the Lines

The first episode dropped May 23 and each new episode will be released every two weeks with the next one set for June 6. The series will give fans insight into the importance of strategy and on the fly thinking. Those crucial real-time decisions and the ability to adapt under tense situations is ultimately what separates the greats from the rest of the table.

Christian Horner, Team Principal and CEO of Oracle Red Bull Racing notes, “We loved being part of this content series developed by PokerStars. Strategy sits at the heart of everything that we do here at Oracle Red Bull Racing just as it does at the poker table.” He adds, “The series really drove home the synergies between the two sports.”

Monaco F1

This past weekend saw one of the more highly anticipated race weekends of the year both for the race and the spectacle it draws. The Monaco F1 tends to draw glamorous yachts and a who’s who of entertainers. The race is always packed with things to see.

While dubbed a racer’s dream, it can be a strategist’s nightmare. “Monaco really exposes the driver, the team and everyone,” says Sergio Perez, winner of the iconic Monaco street circuit in 2022. He adds, “You’ve got to be perfect; you cannot make any mistakes…An early aggressive strategy requires you to make a decision before anyone else…You’re taking a big risk.”

Red Spade Pass

In case you’ve missed it, PokerStars has been giving away exclusive experiences through their Red Spade Pass. Some fans got the chance to fly down to Los Angeles and watch the Lakers play followed by a private trip to Vegas for a round of poker. PokerStars is taking this to the next level by granting lucky winners a trip of a lifetime to witness the first ever F1 race slated for Las Vegas in November 2023.

Rebecca McAdam Willetts, Director of Partnerships & PR at PokerStars adds, “Alongside creating major memories through our Red Spade Pass, we’re looking forward to giving fans additional opportunities to get under the hood this season with even more content, promotions experiences, and rewards.” The Red Spade Passes will be available to win across the PokerStars universe throughout the season between May-October.

Ever wonder what it’s like to live the life of a pro poker player? The travel, the glamour, the prize winnings! It all sounds enticing but can sometimes feel like it’s a world away. Well fret not aspiring players, Gent’s Post had the chance to partake in all the festivities of the most recent PSPC Poker Championship in the Bahamas and we got a first hand lesson from a pro.

Photo: POkerstars entrance at the baha mar resort in nassau bahamas

Gent’s Post had the chance to sit down with PokerStars Canadian Team Pro player Arlie Shaban to chat about his journey to becoming a poker pro and the differences between playing online versus the thrill of live play.

Anyone’s Game

In mid-2017, inspired by the success of his friend Kevin Martin, Shaban decided it was time to quit his day job become the full-time online poker player he aspired to be. It didn’t take him long as the very next day – his first as an official pro – he won the US$7.50 Deepstack on PokerStars.

“I became a pro 5 years ago, started streaming online on Twitch”, says Shaban. He credits a series of online tournaments alongside a mixture of live games for his rise to Team Pro representing Canada. Shaban made it a point to explain how poker truly is for everyone and that it’s not as complicated as it may appear. He notes that PokerStars is working on promoting the game to more people, particularly newer entrants.

Online vs. Live

During our chat, Shaban made it a point to note the pace of play can be different and you should temper your expectations. “The biggest difference between streaming and live is the speed of online play. I was playing 10-12 tables at a time. Live play you’re restricted to just the one table but you definitely pick up a lot more information.”

With online, you should expect that you’ll be seeing more pros sitting at your table. While it can accelerate your learning, Shaban notes it will help you learn faster, even if the competition is tougher. “There’s a vast variety of structured games in PokerStars. You can start at penny games and work your way up without starting with a super expensive game”.

Education

If you’re a newer player looking to learn, there are a series of educational programs available to you through PokerStars. “Pokerstars is amazing for new players”, notes Shaban. “There are no-money games you can play with friends just to learn and understand the basics of how the game works.” Always an important starting point as many new players obviously don’t want to play for keeps without fully understanding the rules of the game.

PokerStars even put together a series of tutorials for the media group at the Baha Mar during the PSPC PokerStars Championship. One of the participants surprisingly made it into the top 100 of an invitational shortly after. Not bad. Shaban adds, “you can start online in the comfort of your own home and there’s a lot of good online training programs to get you going”

Global poker brand PokerStars and their international list of players descended on the Baha Mar resort in beautiful Nassau Bahamas for the PSPC PokerStars Championship. The stars were out and the week long event came with all the glitz and glamour one could expect. Not surprising when you consider approximately $25M was up for grabs.

$4 Million Prize

Amongst the most prestigious moments of the whole tournament was the incredible win by Aliaksandr Shylko of Belarus. A deal was struck at the final table by the remaining 3 players making Aliaksandr the ultimate winner.

In second place came Max Menzel of Germany walking away with $2.5M. This was followed by Philipe Pizzari of Brazil with a cool $1.9M. Several other tournaments took place throughout the week. This included cash games and high roller tables. The stars were out in full swing including UFC announcer and PokerStars Ambassador Bruce Buffer as well as actor David Constible among others. There were also smaller buy-in games for newer entrants ensuring everyone got in on the action.

Platinum Pass

In case you weren’t aware, PokerStars offers a series of Platinum Passes to players who are granted entry into the tournament bypassing the $25K entry fee. One such player was runner up Max Menzel – not a bad way to capitalize on the opportunity.

Included in the pass are your travel and accommodations being covered. Players are able to bring a guest with them which is always a nice touch. Anyone interested in acquiring one of the coveted passes can do so through a series of tournaments leading up to the big event. Check out the PokerStars website for more information on passes throughout the year.

Glitz & Glamour

Taking place at the Baha Mar resort in Nassau, Bahamas, the PokerStars PSPC Championship picked a venue to match the quality and quantity of its participants. The stunning resort hotel features an indoor casino and series of fantastic restaurants. With plenty of pools to pick from and walking distance to the beach, the venue certainly lived up to the hype around the tournament.

If you wanted to go off-site, participants could easily hop on a boat for some snorkeling adventures and check out any number of unique experiences. One of which includes Pablo Escobar’s crashed planes. Go swimming with pigs and sharks or simply take in some sun against the backdrop of the beautiful crystal blue waters.
