Every year, there’s one event I circle on my calendar without hesitation: Vancouver’s Interior Design Show (IDS). It’s the highlight of the design season, and frankly, it’s the one event no one in the industry can afford to miss. As the ultimate platform for everything design in the Pacific Northwest, IDS promises nothing less than the best—from visionary speakers and jaw-dropping installations to rising designers ready to leave their bold mark on the world of design.

With so much to explore, IDS Vancouver brings together established names and rising stars, creating a space that thrives on creativity and innovation. A hallmark of the show is its expertly curated sections, each offering a glimpse into the diverse talents of designers from Canada and beyond. Whether you’re drawn to cutting-edge concepts or timeless craftsmanship, these categories capture the very best of the design world. This year, we’re spotlighting designers who are turning heads, making bold statements, and shaping the future of design across three distinct showcases:

The District: For those eager to bring a piece of design home, The District serves as IDS Vancouver’s vibrant marketplace. It showcases the latest in home design products, offering both consumers and industry insiders access to fresh, contemporary collections.

Studio North: A gallery-like space featuring custom work and limited-edition collections from top-tier Canadian and international designers. From furniture to lighting, ceramics to textiles, Studio North is where craftsmanship meets innovation.

Prototype: Located within Studio North, Prototype offers a forward-looking glimpse at design’s future. Here, designers present innovative concepts and products not yet in production, pushing the boundaries of creativity for the residential market.

During Episode 21 of our podcast, we sat down with one of the premier faces in interior design, Thomas Smythe. Also known for having an impressive array of bowties, the energetic TV personality discussed his life, HIV awareness, business, friendships, and interior design.

Being one of the first people in lifestyle television who was openly gay and talked about it on camera, Thomas has inspired many in the LGBTQ+ community. He spoke on some of the troubles that are still being faced daily, specifically, the mistreatment and misinformation surrounding HIV/AIDS. He also provided valuable advice for young gay men struggling to “come out of the closet” and express themselves openly. “Number one, make sure you protect yourself,” Tommy warned, “and make sure you have a safe space [to come out].”

About Thomas Smythe

Photo: TheExpert.com

Tommy Smythe started as a server, and the core skills obtained in the service industry have been crucial in his development. He believes it should be mandatory to be a server because you’re trained on how to manage a list, how to turn a bad experience into a good one, and you gain the ability to work through “the weeds” (when it’s jam-packed, and you’re just on the brink of being overwhelmed). Many know Tommy from his work alongside HGTV’s Sarah Richardson, but it has been quite some time since their breakup. Unfortunately, the ending of that business relationship ended their strong friendship. When he touched on that, he made sure to emphasize how important it is to not lose your ability to trust in people.

“If we are able to remind each other of our humanity, we do a better job [as people]”

Thomas Smythe

Thomas, who is working with Urban Barn, has been very busy. We’re excited to see how his new business ventures pan out. He is not only a role model for many gay men but also dedicates a lot of his time to supporting causes near his heart. We were drawn to his charity work with the Conn Smythe Foundation, Friends of Ruby, and Casey House. Please tune into Episode 22 for the entire conversation with Tommy Smythe!

Adding a bar cart to your home is one of those things that can really elevate your entertainment space. Whether it be in your kitchen or living room, its a piece of decor that’s guaranteed to turn the heads of all of your guests. While it can be an excellent entertainment addition, it can add extra storage while giving you the opportunity to showcase those beautiful cocktail glasses and bottles.

If you have an empty, open space, this can be the perfect opportunity to purchase and style a bar cart. There’s a lot of ways you can personalize your cart, and if you’re feeling stuck, I’ve got you covered! Here’s everything you need to know when styling your own at-home bar cart.

The Bar Cart

Finding a bar cart that fits your current home decor is the first step. When shopping, you want to look out for the colour, material, size and shape so that it fits your home perfectly. Colours like matte black, gold and rose gold are really popular right now. I think these picks will have you falling in love by the minute.

GP Picks:

West Elm – Fulton Bar Cart

This bar cart is the perfect blend of modern meets elegant design. Because it’s black it’ll fit to almost any room with neutral tones. Its wide, meaning you’ll have enough space to display all your favourite elements. The glass shelves really tie everything together. If you want your room to flow, try looking for a bar cart that’ll match your already existing dining set.

Crate and Barrel – Adina Black Cart with White Concrete Shelves

This cart is giving off all those industrial/modern vibes. I love the mix of matte black metal framing with the white concrete block shelves. This would look great in any living space, especially when you play around with other decor elements like a record player and vinyls.

CB2 – Peekaboo Acrylic Rolling Two Shelf

This is different then what you’d expect a typical bar cart to look like. Acrylic is making waves in the interior design industry and implementing it in your bar cart is clever. Acrylic pairs well with silver and glass, perfect for all your bar cart accessories.

Homary – Black Foldable Bar Cart 3-Tier 25.2″ Rolling Serving Cart with Handle

A sleek black bar cart acts as a show-stopper in any room. This piece is emitting a neutral, yet cool vibe. There’s so many ways you can style this cart, but I personally love how the white and grey furniture looks against the piece.

Decorating The Bar Cart

As you’ve seen from the suggestions above, there are so many decor styles you can play with. Your bar cart should be personalized. It should be a representation of who you are, your personal design style, and of course your taste in alcohol. With that being said, there are a few important things that should be on every bar cart. First, a few cocktail glasses and a shaker. Second, a tray to place your items and lastly, a few eye-catching bottles for display. Here’s a few of my favourite pieces.

GP Picks:

Crate & Barrel – Moxie Optic Coupe Glass

Showcase Those Bottles

Its always safe to have one bottle of each liquor, but of course the decision is up to you. You can never go wrong with a bottle of whisky, vodka, rum, gin and tequila. I like to display nice bottles that can really elevate my bar cart. Some of the GP picks are:

No. 3 London Dry Gin

Final Touches That’ll Make The Cart

Now that you’ve put together your most important items, you can style your bar cart however you please. Remember the possibilities are endless. Here are some items you can use as decor on your bar cart.

  • Pictures
  • Plants
  • Record Player
  • Vinyls
  • Plates & Bowls
  • Fruit
  • Candles
  • Fancy glass bottles
  • Ice bucket w/ champagne
