Confidence is one of the most vital traits a man can possess. It affects every area of life, from career to relationships, and how you handle life’s challenges. But confidence isn’t something you’re just born with — it’s built over time through intentional actions, self-awareness, and consistent personal growth. If you’re wondering how to build confidence as a man, here are seven practical strategies to help you get started.

1. Set and achieve small goals

Building confidence starts with proving to yourself that you can achieve what you set out to do. Start by setting small, realistic goals that are achievable in your daily life. These could be anything from sticking to a workout routine to learning a new skill. Every time you accomplish one of these goals, your brain registers it as a success, and your self-confidence grows.

2. Take care of your physical health

Physical health is directly tied to mental and emotional well-being. Regular exercise, a balanced diet and adequate sleep aren’t just important for your body, but also for your mind. When you feel strong and energized, it’s easier to face life’s challenges with a positive attitude. You don’t need to aim for perfection; even small improvements in your physical health can boost your confidence significantly.

3. Embrace failure as part of growth

Failure is inevitable in life, but it’s how you respond to it that defines your confidence. Instead of fearing failure, see it as a learning opportunity. Successful men often fail multiple times before achieving their goals, and each failure teaches valuable lessons. Embracing setbacks and viewing them as stepping stones helps build resilience, which is crucial for lasting self-esteem.

4. Develop a growth mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that you can improve through effort and learning. Instead of focusing on fixed traits or past mistakes, cultivate the attitude that your abilities and intelligence can grow over time. This mindset fosters continuous improvement and keeps you from being too hard on yourself, thus helping to build lasting confidence.

5. Surround yourself with positive influences

The people you spend time with have a profound impact on your confidence. Surround yourself with individuals who uplift, encourage, and challenge you to be your best self. Positive influences can help you see your potential, while toxic or negative people can drain your self-esteem. Evaluate your social circle and prioritize relationships that nourish your confidence.

6. Improve your body language

Non-verbal communication can play a huge role in how confident you feel and appear. Stand tall, make eye contact, and maintain an open posture. Even when you don’t feel confident, adopting strong body language can help you project confidence, which in turn reinforces how you feel inside. Over time, these small changes in posture and expression can lead to a real boost in self-esteem.

7. Practice self-compassion

Being kind to yourself is essential for building confidence. Men are often taught to be hard on themselves and to suppress emotions, but self-compassion leads to a healthier, more balanced outlook. Acknowledge your imperfections, treat yourself with kindness, and forgive your mistakes. This practice not only reduces self-criticism but also fosters a deep, lasting sense of inner strength.

Building confidence as a man requires time, patience, and consistent effort. By setting achievable goals, embracing growth, and cultivating positive habits, you can foster a sense of self-worth that stands strong in the face of life’s challenges. Confidence is not a destination but a journey — one that you can embark on at any stage of life.

In a major development for Canada’s expanding luxury market, TimeVallée has opened its first flagship store at Montreal’s highly anticipated Royalmount shopping centre. This store marks TimeVallée’s debut in Canada and its 50th boutique worldwide, signifying the brand’s commitment to broadening its international presence. In partnership with Maison Birks, a Canadian luxury icon, TimeVallée offers a curated selection of prestigious watch brands, blending rich heritage with modern craftsmanship.

Jean-Christophe Bédos, President and CEO of Birks Group, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership: “We’re thrilled to bring something entirely new to the Canadian market. TimeVallée offers an international luxury watch experience that is perfectly aligned with the growing demand for high-end retail in Canada. With Royalmount poised to become a major luxury destination, we’re confident that TimeVallée will help solidify that status.”

For Emmanuel Perrin, CEO of TimeVallée and Head of Specialist Watchmakers Distribution, running Richemont’s Specialist Watchmaker’s Maisons, the expansion into Canada was a natural progression: “Canada is a market we’ve had our eye on for some time, and partnering with Birks made perfect sense for us. We’ve had a longstanding relationship with Maison Birks through several of our brands, which allowed us to hit the ground running. This Montreal boutique is just the beginning, and we have exciting plans for the future.”

A global gateway to luxury watchmaking: TimeVallée

Founded in Switzerland, TimeVallée, a Richemont brand, is renowned for offering an immersive and educational luxury watch retail experience. Unlike traditional mono-brand boutiques, TimeVallée brings together over 30 prestigious watch Maisons under one roof. The Montreal boutique includes iconic brands such as Baume & Mercier, Cartier, Chopard, Grand Seiko, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Panerai, and Piaget, making it a destination for both seasoned collectors and newcomers to the world of luxury watches.

The store’s design plays a crucial role in creating an inviting and luxurious atmosphere. The 2,800 sq. ft. space at Royalmount is inspired by the curves of Swiss valleys, with a colour palette of golden and champagne hues that reflect the elegance and craftsmanship of the watches. Each brand has its own dedicated space within the store, allowing customers to explore the unique heritage of each Maison.

“We designed TimeVallée to be open and welcoming, so customers can fully immerse themselves in the art of watchmaking,” said Perrin. “It’s about creating a space where both seasoned collectors and newcomers feel comfortable. We want to inspire a new generation of watch lovers who might be taking their first steps into the world of luxury watches.”

One of the store’s standout features is its interactive and educational approach. TimeVallée aims to demystify the world of luxury watches by making it accessible to everyone. “Our goal is to create an experience where customers can learn about the intricate craftsmanship behind each timepiece. Whether you’re here to make a purchase or simply explore, we want TimeVallée to feel like a welcoming space for all,” Perrin added.

The future of Canada’s luxury market

The opening of TimeVallée at Royalmount is part of a broader effort to elevate Canada’s luxury shopping landscape. With other high-end brands like Rolex (operated by Raffi Jewellers), Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Saint Laurent, Sandro, Versace and more, are also setting up shop at Royalmount, this new shopping centre is expected to rival Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre as a key luxury hub. For Montreal, Royalmount represents a significant leap forward in the city’s ability to attract high-end retailers and cater to the growing demand for luxury goods.

Royalmount is a game changer for Montreal…

Jean-Christophe Bédos, President and CEO of Birks Group

“Royalmount is a game changer for Montreal,” said Bédos. “It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally seeing the infrastructure that high-end brands need to thrive in Canada. We believe this will become a focal point for luxury shopping not just in Montreal, but across the country.”

Bédos emphasized that Canada’s shifting demographics are driving the demand for luxury products. “Canada’s population is growing by about a million people a year, and many of these new Canadians come from countries where luxury shopping is part of their lifestyle. We’re seeing increased demand for high-end products, and TimeVallée is well-positioned to meet that demand.”

Looking ahead: Expanding TimeVallée’s presence in Canada

The Montreal boutique may be TimeVallée’s first Canadian location, but it certainly won’t be the last. TimeVallée has ambitious plans for the Canadian market, with the next store set to open at Vancouver’s Oakridge Centre in 2025. Perrin noted, “This is just the beginning for TimeVallée in Canada. We’re excited to bring our unique approach to other cities and continue building relationships with Canadian luxury consumers.”

As Canada’s luxury market continues to expand, the arrival of TimeVallée and the development of Royalmount signal a new era for high-end retail in the country. With its focus on heritage, innovation, and accessibility, TimeVallée is poised to make a lasting impact on the Canadian luxury landscape.

Perrin concluded, “The luxury watch industry is evolving, and so are our customers. We want TimeVallée to be a place where people come not only to shop, but to learn, experience, and connect with the world of fine watchmaking. We’re excited to be part of Canada’s growing luxury scene.”

October 10th marks World Mental Health Day, a vital day dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for mental health issues worldwide. It’s a reminder of the importance of mental well-being and the need for support and open conversations. For men, in particular, this day highlights the importance of challenging cultural norms and stereotypes that often discourage us from speaking about our mental health.

The stigma surrounding men’s mental health

For generations, men have been taught that strength means stoicism. They are often encouraged to be the “rock” for their families, friends, and communities—strong, silent, and impervious to emotional distress. This conditioning has created a stigma around men’s mental health, where vulnerability is mistakenly equated with weakness. Consequently, many men feel they must face their struggles alone, leading to a reluctance to seek help or talk about what they are going through.

The statistics paint a worrying picture. Research shows that men are less likely than women to seek mental health support. In many countries, suicide rates are significantly higher among men, especially those aged 45 and older. These numbers indicate a deeper, systemic issue: a culture that often fails to provide men with the space and acceptance to be emotionally vulnerable.

Why world mental health day matters

World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to shatter these harmful stereotypes and promote healthier attitudes toward mental health, particularly for men. It’s a day that underscores the importance of reaching out and connecting—two powerful actions that can break down the barriers that prevent men from seeking support.

By encouraging men to open up, the day serves as a reminder that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a display of courage. Talking about struggles, anxieties, and fears requires immense strength, and when men do so, they not only begin their own healing process but also inspire others around them to do the same. It’s about shifting the narrative and creating an environment where men feel safe to express themselves without judgment.

Let’s talk masculinity…

On October 18th, Movember is hosting an in-person panel in Toronto at the Globe and Mail Centre. I will be moderating the panel consisting of Tychon Carter, Dr. Ellen Choi & JP Saxe to talk about modern masculinity and the role it plays in shaping men today. This is a free event and open to the public with the intention of promoting healthy masculinity and talking about men’s mental health. For those who cannot attend, the panel is being taped and will be published as part of a Gent’s Talk episode in November. Tickets can be found here.

The power of talking and sharing

Opening up to someone about your struggles can be an incredibly healing act. Studies show that simply talking about one’s feelings can reduce the intensity of emotional pain. When men engage in honest conversations about their mental health, they often experience relief, clarity, and a sense of connection. This is because sharing with someone else breaks the cycle of isolation, one of the most dangerous aspects of struggling with mental health issues.

Unfortunately, many men believe that their problems are a burden to others or that no one will understand. This mindset perpetuates isolation and makes reaching out seem daunting. World Mental Health Day is a powerful reminder that there are people who care and want to listen—whether that’s a friend, a family member, or a mental health professional.

Moreover, talking openly about mental health creates a ripple effect. When one man speaks up, it encourages others to follow suit. It normalizes these conversations, showing that it’s okay to not be okay. By using platforms like social media or participating in local community events on this day, men can be part of a movement that breaks down stigma and fosters a supportive environment for mental health discussions.

Practical steps for men to take on World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day isn’t just about raising awareness; it’s about taking action. Men can use this day as a starting point for making positive changes in their mental well-being and encouraging others to do the same. Here are some practical steps:

  1. Reach Out: Make a point to connect with someone you trust—whether it’s a friend, a family member, or a professional. Opening up, even if it feels uncomfortable at first, is a crucial step toward finding relief and support.
  2. Listen and Support Others: Being a good listener can have a significant impact. If a friend reaches out, offer them your time and attention. Sometimes, just being there for someone else can help you recognize your own need for support.
  3. Engage in Mental Health Initiatives: Participate in events, workshops, or online discussions related to World Mental Health Day. These activities can offer new perspectives and connect you with resources that may be helpful.
  4. Practice Self-Care: Use this day to prioritize self-care. This might mean setting aside time for physical activity, mindfulness, or relaxation—whatever helps you recharge and refocus on your well-being.
  5. Encourage Open Conversations in Your Circles: If you’re comfortable, share your experiences with mental health, either in person or online. Your story could be the encouragement someone else needs to seek help.

Changing the conversation around men’s mental health

World Mental Health Day is about more than just one day of awareness. It’s an opportunity to create lasting change and break down the barriers preventing men from accessing the support they need. The goal is to cultivate a culture where men feel empowered to speak up and seek help, rather than hiding their struggles out of fear of judgment.

Men must know that their feelings are valid and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not failure. By opening up and talking to someone, they are taking a critical step toward mental and emotional well-being. It’s essential that society supports this journey by normalizing vulnerability and building safe spaces for honest conversations.

World Mental Health Day serves as a powerful reminder that mental health is universal and that everyone, regardless of gender, deserves the support and space to heal. For men, this day is an opportunity to reject the old, harmful stereotypes of stoicism and embrace a more open, supportive approach to well-being.

By encouraging men to speak out and share their stories, we can build a world where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health—a world where strength is defined not by silence, but by the courage to be open, honest, and vulnerable.

Mark Groves, Canada’s leading Human Connection Specialist, has released his anticipated debut book, Liberated Love: Release Codependent Patterns and Create the Love You Desire. Co-authored with Certified Health Coach Kylie McBeath, the book aims to revolutionize how we understand and foster relationships. In a candid interview with Gent’s Post, Groves shared insights about his book and the evolving dynamics of modern masculinity.

The Genesis of Liberated Love

Liberated Love is more than just a guide; it’s a roadmap for those seeking meaningful and liberated connections. “We all desire great love, but so often there are things standing in the way,” Groves explained. The book delves into personal journeys, identifying patterns that keep people ‘stuck’ and how healing these behaviors can elevate relationships. Groves and McBeath bring their personal experiences to the table, providing a relatable and practical approach to creating a thriving love life.

Understanding Codependency and Attachment

At the heart of Liberated Love are the concepts of codependency and attachment theory. Groves emphasized the importance of recognizing and addressing these patterns: “Taking responsibility for our past patterns can be transformative. Our goal is not to force people to change but to lead to shifts in the dynamics of relationships.” The book aims to help readers step out of protection mode and into connection mode, fostering relationships that are built on choice, truth, safety, and respect.

Creating the Love You Desire

When asked about how someone can create the love they truly want, Groves highlighted the misconceptions shaped by societal narratives. “We’ve been taught to desire certain things in relationships, but it’s crucial to distinguish what we truly want versus what we were taught to want.” He stressed that conflict or friction isn’t a sign of misalignment but rather an opportunity for deeper understanding. “The best couples don’t avoid fights; they handle conflict differently, with curiosity and mutual respect.”

Modern Masculinity and Emotional Expression

A significant portion of the conversation focused on modern masculinity and the challenges men face in expressing their emotions. Groves noted that many men are trapped in outdated notions of masculinity, which discourage vulnerability and emotional honesty. “For a lot of men, the idea of expressing emotions is tied to their perception of masculinity. We need to teach that being emotionally literate is a strength, not a weakness.”

He also pointed out the societal pressures that shape these dynamics: “Men often learn that to be ‘masculine’ is to be stoic and self-reliant, but this can lead to unhealthy patterns in relationships. We need to redefine what it means to be a man in today’s world.”

Modern Masculinity and Vulnerability

During our conversation, Groves delved deeper into the societal pressures men face when it comes to vulnerability and expressing emotions. “A lot of men struggle with the idea that being open about their feelings is somehow unmasculine. This is a narrative we need to change,” he asserted.

He shared an anecdote about a man who felt emasculated for expressing his emotions in a “feminized” way. “There’s this pervasive belief that emotions are feminine, which isn’t true. Emotions are human,” Groves explained. He emphasized the importance of dismantling these outdated beliefs to allow men to express themselves authentically without fear of judgment or ridicule.

Groves also highlighted the significance of having honest conversations about boundaries and needs within relationships. “Many men are conditioned to avoid conflict and suppress their needs, which can lead to resentment and dissatisfaction. Learning to set boundaries and communicate openly is crucial for healthy relationships,” he said.

The Importance of Support Networks

Groves stressed the value of support networks for men. “Men often lack spaces where they can discuss their feelings and challenges openly. Having a supportive group can be incredibly empowering and help men navigate their emotions and relationships better,” he noted.

By integrating these insights and practical advice, Liberated Love aims to provide readers with the tools they need to build healthier, more fulfilling relationships. Groves’ approach is both compassionate and practical, offering a new perspective on love, connection, and modern masculinity.

The Role of Boundaries

Groves emphasized the importance of setting boundaries in relationships, a lesson he learned through personal experience. “Boundaries are essential for maintaining healthy relationships. They help you communicate your needs and respect the needs of others.” He recalled his own struggles with boundaries and how learning to set them transformed his relationships.

The Impact of Liberated Love

Liberated Love is designed to guide readers through a process of self-discovery and relationship transformation. Groves and McBeath share real-life stories, exercises, and tools that lead to productive self-examination. “Our book is structured to help readers identify their relationship patterns, understand their origins, and create new, healthier ways of connecting with others.”

The book offers a new template for relationships, one that moves away from codependency and towards mutual strength and liberation. “We want to inspire others to understand and nurture love in their lives,” Groves said. The goal is to help readers create relationships that not only survive but thrive.

Final Thoughts

Mark Groves’ Liberated Love is a timely and essential read for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of relationships and themselves. It challenges outdated norms and provides practical advice for creating connections that are rooted in mutual respect and emotional honesty. As Groves puts it, “When we fully embrace our own patterns and work on ourselves, we experience true freedom and liberation.”

By weaving together personal anecdotes, expert insights, and actionable advice, Liberated Love offers a comprehensive guide to navigating the complexities of modern relationships. Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or somewhere in between, this book provides valuable tools to help you create the love you desire and deserve.

CAMH Dr David Goldbloom mental health and depression discussion on Gent's Talk

This week on episode 106 of season 8 of Gent’s Talk, presented by BULOVA Canada, we had the honour of hosting Dr. David Goldbloom, a leading mental health expert and the founding physician-in-chief at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Dr. Goldbloom’s extensive experience and insight into mental health made for an enlightening conversation. We delved into various aspects of mental health, breaking down stigmas and providing valuable information for those struggling with mental illness. This article highlights key points from our discussion and quotes some of Dr. Goldbloom’s profound insights.

Episode 106 of the Gent’s Talk podcast with CAMH’s Dr. David Goldbloom:

Understanding the state of mental health today

Dr. Goldbloom began by reflecting on his 40-year career, noting significant progress in addressing mental health issues. “I’ve seen a lot of change. The needle has moved quite significantly in terms of fighting stigma, improving understanding, compassion, commitment, and support for mental illness,” he shared. Despite these advancements, he acknowledged that much work remains to be done to meet the needs of the one in five Canadians who experience mental illness or substance use issues annually.

The pervasive impact of mental illness

One of the most striking points Dr. Goldbloom made was about the widespread impact of mental illness. “There’s nobody who can honestly stand up and say not my family, not my siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, spouse, children, or myself. Nobody’s been affected,” he emphasized. This universality makes it all the more important to address mental health openly and without shame.

Differentiating sadness from depression

A significant part of our conversation focused on understanding depression. Dr. Goldbloom explained the difference between feeling sad and being clinically depressed. “If you ask somebody who has struggled with depression, what’s the difference between feeling sad and feeling depressed, they can tell you in a heartbeat. When I’m feeling depressed, I just don’t feel anything. I feel flat, empty, and hopeless,” he explained. This distinction is crucial in recognizing when someone may need professional help.

The silent struggle and stigma

Dr. Goldbloom highlighted the persistent stigma surrounding mental illness and its roots in fear and misunderstanding. He pointed out that historically, there has been a “conspiracy of silence” around mental illness, making it difficult for individuals to seek help. “When your mind is broken, when your brain is not working properly, are you, still you? This has the potential to disrupt how you see that person or how you see yourself,” he noted.

Recognizing and addressing mental health issues

For those unsure if they or someone they know is experiencing a mental illness, Dr. Goldbloom offered practical advice. “One of the advantages of people who know someone who may be struggling with depression, is that you’re going to notice changes in them that they may not be aware, of themselves,” he said. He encouraged having meaningful conversations and being persistent in offering support.

The heavy cost of depression

Dr. Goldbloom discussed the significant impact of depression on individuals and workplaces. “Depression is going to be the leading cause of disability worldwide by 2030,” he stated. He emphasized that depression disrupts various aspects of life, including sleep, appetite, energy, interest, and cognitive functions like motivation and concentration.

The good news: Treatability of depression

Despite the daunting statistics, Dr. Goldbloom reassured listeners that depression is highly treatable. “We have over half a century of evidence that treatments for depression work, whether they are psychological treatments, behavioral activation and exercise treatments, or modern antidepressant medications,” he affirmed. This message is crucial for those feeling hopeless about their condition.

Supporting loved ones with mental illness

Dr. Goldbloom also provided guidance on supporting friends or family members with mental illness. He stressed the importance of having a prepared, confidential conversation and being persistent in offering help. “If you’re a real friend, you have to stand your ground,” he advised, emphasizing the need to be a supportive and persistent presence.

Addressing common misconceptions about schizophrenia

A significant portion of our discussion focused on schizophrenia. Dr. Goldbloom debunked common myths, noting that people with schizophrenia are more likely to be victimized than to victimize others. “For most people with schizophrenia, they look nothing like what you see on CSI,” he clarified. He described the symptoms and experiences of those with schizophrenia, painting a more accurate picture of this complex illness.

Our conversation with Dr. David Goldbloom was enlightening and inspiring. His expertise and compassion shone through as he addressed the complexities of mental health. We hope this episode of Gent’s Talk helps to break down stigmas and encourages more open conversations about mental health. Remember, mental illness affects us all, and understanding and support are key to overcoming it.

Episode 105 of the Gent’s Talk podcast with celebrity chef and restauranteur, Antonio Park:

The early days of chef Antonio Park: Cultivating a love for food

Antonio Park’s journey into the culinary world began at a young age. Growing up in Argentina, he was immersed in a vibrant and industrious environment where his parents ran a laundromat business. “My parents used to do floating acid stonewashed jeans. In the 70s and 80s, remember like Rijn Wrangler, they have these soft spots on the jeans, and that’s what my parents used to do,” Antonio recounted. Amidst the hustle and bustle of their business, his mother cooked meals for the entire staff, fostering a sense of community and family.

This environment sparked chef Antonio Park’s interest in food. He recalled, “I was in charge of going there and picking up things. Making sure that, you know, I choose the right onions, garlic, cucumber, watermelon, carrots, mango, you name it… That’s where it really started.” This hands-on experience with fresh produce and communal cooking laid the foundation for his culinary passion.

From dishwasher to celebrated chef

Antonio’s path to becoming a renowned celebrity chef was not without its challenges. He started his career humbly, working as a dishwasher. “I don’t know if I was thinking, ‘I’m gonna work my way up.’ My life was never like that. My life was like, just put whatever in front of me, and I’ll just try to do my best,” he shared. This relentless work ethic and dedication to excellence translated into a successful career.

He emphasized the importance of discipline and perseverance, drawing from his own experiences. “If you’re a dishwasher, be the best dishwasher. If I have to clean the cups and, you know, clean the wineglasses, clean the tables, clean the dishes, clean a fish, harvest something, you know, I just want to do the best job that I can,” Antonio stated, highlighting his philosophy of excelling in every role he undertook.

Building a family through food

For Antonio, food is not just about sustenance; it’s about building relationships and creating a sense of family. He spoke passionately about the importance of communal meals, both in his upbringing and in his restaurants. “I try to do everything that I can to bring that community back, that family back together,” he said, reflecting on the decline of family dinners in modern society. Antonio strives to instill this culture in his restaurants, encouraging his team to eat together and bond over shared meals.

Navigating failures and successes

Antonio’s journey has seen its fair share of failures, but he views them as invaluable learning experiences. “I failed. I failed some of them dramatically… But at the end of the day, I take it as everything is my fault. Because it’s my project,” he admitted. One notable setback was losing $1.8 million in six months on a business venture. Despite the financial loss, Antonio remains resilient and positive, saying, “You can’t change the past. You can change today and tomorrow.”

His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to embrace risk and learn from their mistakes. “Take that risk… If you’re bleeding a lot in a business, and you’re stressed every day, you can’t sleep, you’re not being a good father, a good husband, a good wife, or anything, give up, move on and build something else,” he advised.

Embracing authenticity and mentoring the next generation

Antonio’s commitment to authenticity extends beyond his culinary creations. He believes in empowering his team and helping them achieve their full potential. “When somebody becomes better than you, you have to give him wings to fly. You cannot keep him,” he said, recounting how he opened a restaurant for his sous chef who had surpassed him in skill.

He also shared his dedication to passing down cultural heritage and traditions, emphasizing the importance of connecting with older generations. “The relationship between our grandparents and our grandchildren is disappearing… I want to create something that will connect our old generations to the new generations,” he said, outlining his vision for bridging generational gaps through food and shared experiences.

Looking ahead: Exciting ventures and collaborations

Antonio Park’s future is filled with exciting projects and collaborations. From international ventures in Europe and the Middle East to innovative dining experiences in Toronto, he continues to push the boundaries of the culinary world. One particularly unique project is a street dinner in Yorkville, Toronto, in collaboration with artist Dan Pham. “We’re doing a dinner on the street of Yorkville for 40 people with an artist called Dan Pham from Dallas,” he revealed, highlighting his commitment to blending art and cuisine.

Chef Antonio Park’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and community. His dedication to his craft and his unwavering positivity serve as an inspiration to all who aspire to make their mark in the culinary world and beyond.

In the heart of Belize, amidst the turquoise Caribbean waters and the lush rainforest, stands two luxury resorts that have captured the imaginations of travellers worldwide. The mastermind behind these paradisiacal escapes is Daniel Lighter, a former criminal lawyer from Montreal. In an exclusive interview with Gent’s Post, Lighter shared his incredible journey from practicing law to one day deciding to build two of the country’s most celebrated resorts: Matachica Resort & Spa and the GAÏA Riverlodge.

From law to leisure: How it all began

“People often ask, ‘How did you even think of doing this?’ It just happened,” Lighter recalls. The story starts in the year 2000 when personal tragedy struck. “We lost a baby, my sister passed away, and my marriage ended. It was a tough time.” Facing his first Christmas alone, he decided to distract himself with a week of scuba diving. Belize seemed off the beaten path, so he booked a flight to the island of Ambergris Caye without even knowing its exact location.

On arriving, he found the translucent blue waters and rustic charm captivating. “It was quiet, very third-world, and the town of San Pedro had sand streets. It was tacos, barbecue chicken, and a beer. I loved it,” says Lighter. He was also struck by the budding investment potential on the island, with real estate agents touting condos and timeshares. The idea of owning a beachfront property to enjoy with his five children seemed enticing.

“It was tacos, barbecue chicken, and a beer. I loved it.”

Daniel Lighter

Back in Montreal, a casual conversation with a friend led to the phone number of a woman named Jennifer who had a home in Ambergris Caye. She and her husband Patrick connected Lighter with their friends who were the original owners of Matachica Resort & Spa. The owner envisioned Lighter as the perfect buyer for the resort. “She seduced me into buying her hotel,” he laughs. Despite his lack of hospitality experience, Lighter bought Matachica in 2006.

Building a Belizean oasis

Initially, Lighter spent three years learning the business and making small improvements to Matachica. “I was learning what a travel agent is, who does what,” he says. By 2009, he expanded Matachica by adding two casitas. In 2010, he developed eight more, creating a true Belizean oasis.

The uniqueness of Matachica lies in its authenticity. “Our units are individual casitas with thatched roofs and beautiful painted murals. There’s no TV in the bar or restaurant. It’s an adult environment where people can reconnect,” he explains. Matachica’s ethos revolves around offering a simple yet luxurious experience true to Belizean culture.

The evolution of GAÏA Riverlodge

In 2011, Lighter set his sights on a new venture. “I Googled ‘hotels for sale in Belize,’ and GAÏA Riverlodge came up,” he recalls. After a brief visit, he realized that the 16-casita resort nestled in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve was the perfect complement to Matachica.

GAÏA needed love, so he renovated it, blending rustic charm with a luxurious feel. The resort is built around the Five Sisters Waterfalls, which provides a spectacular natural setting. “The river and waterfalls are incredible. Gaia offers an authentic rainforest experience, not Disney-fied.”

Vision for the future

Lighter continues to expand and refine his resorts, adding more casitas, villas, and unique experiences. At Matachica, he has recently acquired an adjacent property, Azul, which he plans to upscale for private dining and personalized services like a private bartender and boat captain. “There’s a helipad on the back, so we’re going to upscale those two villas for a lot of private travel.”

At GAÏA, he is finalizing the purchase of 20 acres next door to develop new luxury accommodations, potentially including treehouses and glamping tents. “I’m thinking about a proper spa and maybe a few more luxurious rooms,” he says. Despite the rapid expansion, Lighter remains committed to providing personalized service and maintaining the authenticity that sets his resorts apart. “It’s all about experience,” he insists. “Building a room is easy. It’s everything that goes around and in it that makes it more challenging but much more exciting.”

Why Belize?

When asked why Canadians should visit Belize, Lighter highlights its unique appeal: “It’s different. Canadians love adventure, and Belize provides an authentic experience beyond the typical beach vacation.” The English-speaking nature of Belize, along with its Commonwealth structure, makes it comfortable for Canadians. Plus, there’s no shortage of adventure: “Hiking, canoeing, caves, ruins, snorkeling, fishing. Belize is perfect for Canadians.”

Luxury resorts in Belize might not yet have the mass tourism of other Caribbean destinations, but that’s what makes it so special. With the passion and vision of people like Daniel Lighter, Belize’s appeal is only set to grow.

Exclusively on Apple TV+.

In the eclectic and often absurd world of television, few shows capture the nostalgic elegance and comedic chaos of the past like Apple TV+’s new series, “Palm Royale.” Set against the backdrop of 1969 Palm Beach, the series not only serves as a love letter to a bygone era of fashion and social decorum but also as a satire of the lengths to which people will go to climb the social ladder. With an ensemble cast that includes legends like Carol Burnett and pop icons like Ricky Martin, “Palm Royale” has quickly become a topic of fascination and entertainment. Luckily, I got the chance to sit down with eight-pack donning actor and producer, Ben Palacios, who plays Ricky Martin’s “love interest” (let’s call it) in the show, as the Prince of Luxembourg (let’s just say they have a little…fling)… who had nothing but great things to say about working with this star-studded cast.

The 35-year-old multi-hyphenate American actor (also known for his role in “Sistas,” “Silicon Beach,” and for producing “Hunkappella”)–that at first glance on Instagram you’d think should be the next face of Calvin Klein–couldn’t help but express how amazing his experience working with the cast on the show was. “For a show full of characters that are such diabolical narcissistic monsters, everyone on set, the whole cast, the directors, and the production team from the top down, were so welcoming and kind and sweet and generous with their time–it was really lovely,” says Palacios.

Am I wrong? Or is it just getting hot in here… lol. Needless to say, I wasn’t surprised to hear that Palacios is also a model, producer, singer/songwriter, self professed “a capella geek,” voice actor, celebrity nanny, Enrique Iglesias’ hand double (for real–he shared how he actually did all the POV shots for him in his music video, “Turn the Night Up”) and the list goes on.

A look at the TV series: Palm Royale

“Palm Royale” invites viewers into a world where the elite’s desire for recognition and power unfolds in uproarious scenarios, each filled with intricate plots and sharp dialogues. The series navigates through the lives of its characters with a vibrant flair, encapsulating the essence of the late ’60s with all its opulence and the emerging cultural shifts.

The show’s aesthetic is meticulously crafted, featuring period-accurate costumes (which I’d say deserves all the awards and accolades on it’s own, to say the least) that range from flamboyant leisure suits to elegant evening gowns, embodying the extravagant lifestyles and fashion sensibilities of its time. These visual elements not only enrich the narrative but also help anchor the comedic elements in a tangible, relatable reality.

Comedic elements and societal commentary

At its core, “Palm Royale” is a comedy, but one that manages to weave in commentary about social climbing, gender dynamics, and the quest for social status. The humour is both situational and character-driven, deriving laughs from the absurdity of its characters’ actions and the unexpected consequences they face. This comedic approach allows the show to tackle themes of feminism and social power dynamics under the guise of humour and satire.

The star-studded ensemble

The inclusion of stars like Carol Burnett and Ricky Martin adds a significant draw to the series. Burnett’s legendary comedic timing and Martin’s charismatic presence blend seamlessly with the ensemble cast, creating a dynamic chemistry that is rare and delightful to watch. In his role, Martin plays a character entwined in a complicated romantic liaison with Ben Palacios’s character, the Prince of Luxembourg—a pairing that adds a delicious layer of intrigue and romance to the plot.

During our interview, Ben Palacios shared insights into his character and the series. “It’s a show full of diabolical social climbers who all have an agenda,” he explained, highlighting the ambitious nature of the series’ characters. Palacios also discussed preparing for his role with the help of an accent coach to perfect a Luxembourg accent, a detail that showcases his dedication to his role.

Ben Palacios on working with the King of Latin Pop: Ricky Martin

Palacios spoke so highly of his experience working with Ricky Martin, describing him as “so sweet” and “earnest,” which contrasted sharply with the “rock star” persona he had anticipated. This off-screen camaraderie translated into genuine on-screen chemistry, particularly in scenes that required a nuanced portrayal of intimacy and connection.

“One scene I did with Ricky… we were in this beautiful presidential hotel suite… and it’s like a post-coital scene,” Palacios recounted. The authenticity and spontaneity in these moments were palpable, further enhanced by the actors’ willingness to embrace their characters’ complexities fully.

Meme with Ben Palacios and Ricky Martin.

Cultural impact and viewer expectations

“Palm Royale” does more than just entertain; it invites audiences to reflect on the parallels between the societal norms of the 1960s and those of today. Through its comedic lens, the series explores themes of equality, ambition, and the often ludicrous nature of societal expectations.

As the series unfolds, viewers can expect a rollercoaster of emotions, adorned with laughter, retro glamour, and a critical look at social dynamics. With its stellar cast and sharp writing, “Palm Royale” promises to be a beacon of comedic and stylistic brilliance in the landscape of modern television.

Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale” is honestly a cultural artifact, that resonates with the timeless human desire for belonging and recognition, all while making us laugh at the absurdity of it all. As the series progresses, it undoubtedly continues to captivate and amuse along the way, leaving a mark, so you don’t want to stop watching.

This ambitious project, with its blend of humour, historical nuance, and social commentary, beautifully encapsulates the essence of an era while holding up a mirror to the viewers’ contemporary lives. For anyone looking for a show that combines amazing acting, intricate storytelling, and a dose of nostalgia, “Palm Royale” is not to be missed.

As for Ben Palacios, it was such a pleasure chatting with him and theres no doubt in our mind that he’s worth keeping an eye on. He’s definitely got that “stardust,” if you will… I can’t wait to see what he does next. And make sure to check him out on Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, another one of his most recent roles that’s available on Netflix.

Lastly, if you haven’t already (considering we plugged Iglesias above as Palacios has played his hand double, lol), don’t forget to plug into Enrique Iglesias latest album released, “Final Vol. 2” now streaming on Apple music. 😉

In an intimate and revealing interview, legendary bodybuilding champion Phil Heath shares his insights on the transformative power of gratitude, vulnerability, and overcoming adversity. Heath, who’s powerful documentary ‘Breaking Olympia: The Phil Heath Story’ was just recently released in Canada, discusses his evolution not just as an athlete but as a person deeply engaged in the pursuit of personal growth and authenticity. It’s an incredibly authentic conversation with one of the sport’s greatest.

In speaking to Gent’s Post, Phil Heath breaks down what his life was really like at its hardest…

Gratitude

Phil Heath, a man whose achievements in bodybuilding are unparalleled, speaks candidly about his inner journey and the profound insights gained through his experiences both in and out of the gym. From his humble beginnings to reaching the pinnacle of Olympia victories, Heath’s path has been anything but ordinary.

I had the opportunity to explore Heath’s perspectives starting with a simple yet profound revelation about living from a place of gratitude. “I just think about being fully aware of the fact that your heart is beating, and air is in my lungs… I have a massive amount of opportunity,” Heath explains. This acknowledgment of life’s basic gifts sets the tone for a discussion that delves deep into the essence of what drives this champion.

Image: Phil heath

The conversation transitions into the making of Heath’s documentary, ‘Breaking Olympia: The Phil Heath Story’, revealing the personal and emotional layers that often remain unseen in the world of muscle and might. “This came about through director Brett Harvey… really focusing on what’s inside here,” says Heath, tapping into the less discussed emotional and mental battles that define a true athlete’s life.

Image: Phil heath

Mental Health

Heath opens up about his past struggles, including his transition from basketball to bodybuilding and the mental health challenges that accompany such a life-altering shift. “A lot of people that played Division I athletics…have to deal with the reality of not playing past that level,” he shares, highlighting the universal challenge of unmet expectations and the resilience needed to move forward.

As the discussion delves deeper, Heath emphasizes the importance of vulnerability, especially for men in today’s society where strength is often measured by physical prowess alone. “It’s about showing your best foot forward, giving your best honest effort when you go through hardships,” Heath articulates, urging men to embrace openness as a strength.

Breaking Olympia: The Phil Heath Story

The documentary, as Heath hopes, will leave viewers inspired to recognize and nurture their own potential greatness. “What I want people to take away from Breaking Olympia is the fact that everyone…has greatness within themselves, but they have to acknowledge it and give themselves permission to be great,” he states powerfully.

Image: Phil heath

Phil Heath’s narrative is a compelling reminder of the battles fought and won outside the gym, in the corners of the mind and the depths of the heart. It’s a story of a man who lifts weights and spirits alike, pushing beyond the physical to reach emotional and spiritual heights that inspire all of us to strive for more.
