3. Muddle the sugar cube to dissolve it and create a simple syrup.
4. Fill the glass with ice cubes.
5. Pour Angel’s Envy Bourbon over the ice.
6. Stir gently to combine.
7. Garnish with an orange twist, maybe even rubbing it along the edge of the glass first for some extra aromatics, then placing it in the drink.

This typically occurs when one is waking up or falling asleep. It is harmless, and some people will only experience it once or twice in their lifetime. Numerous things can happen during sleep paralysis, but the most common thing is the paralyzed feeling where you cannot move, speak or even open your eyes.  

The exact cause of sleep paralysis remains uncertain. Although associated with factors such as insomnia, narcolepsy, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and irregular sleep patterns. Origin Story

Born in Zambia to a Zambian mother and Congolese father, Lavi$h immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada at an early age. Aside from adjusting to the weather and culture change, Lavi$h found himself working through being bullied and often times found himself an outcast. Recording music, which his cousins introduced him to, became the outlet/ therapy to deal with those issues. He started to put out singles on Soundcloud constantly reinventing his sound. But this was ultimately met with criticism and more bullying. Rather than running away from it, Lavi$h leaned into it. Slowly building a loyal fanbase that connected to his unique sound and subject matter. This eventually led to an album collaboration with artist Kingsley called Sweeter Life. In the fall of 2018, he partnered with cannabis brand RIFF to headline a show in Winnipeg. He had an enthusiastic 400+ audience before heading to tackle the big Toronto music scene.

Momentum

Lavi$h continued to build on the momentum he developed as an independent artist releasing singles with his producing partner Trizz. He credits Trizz for keeping him focused and helping him create the unique Lavi$h sound, described as multi-dimensional future soul. He remained focused on his audience getting the sense of bravery in charting one’s own path versus following trends. Lavi$h notes his influences include Otis Redding, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklyn, Bob Marley, Queen, and 2 Pac.

When he released the single “World In My Hands” under Def Jam Label, he dealt with a lot of fear on how the new raw sound would be received. More importantly, he wants to use his success to empower others, so he developed Club BLVD. An organization that stands on love and empowering others through building free studios in Winnipeg, Zambia, and the Congo among other projects.

This artist while still ‘new’ has a mentality that can only lead to success, possessing talent with humility, an attitude of perseverance, and a sense of community. Receiving co-signs from legends like Kardinal Offishall, Gucci Mane, and Drake, Lavi$h is definitely an artist to put into your music rotation.

There are those rare individuals that when you see them perform, you know you are experiencing something special. They move you with their energy, charisma, presence. Sage Harris is one of those individuals. The multi-talented artist sings, writes, produces, and directs a true one-man show. Gent’s Post had the chance to sit down with Harris and talk about his early days and where his growing career is going next. Most of all, we chat about how he’s figuring it out as he goes.

How it started

Harris was born in Toronto and from an early age knew he could command attention with his performances. Wanting to follow in the footsteps of his musical mother, he was always attracted to music. From boys choir to winning 1st prize at age 15 in a talent show, Harris has never looked back. His sounds and smooth moves drew comparisons to Chris Brown as he was mainly performing R&B songs but never felt he was just a one-genre artist. Once you listen to Harris’ voice and the broad range he carries, it comes as no surprise that his favourite crooner is legendary Canadian music talent Michael Buble.

When you talk to Harris you are immediately captivated by how he describes his musical journey. His love and passion for the craft shines through quite evidently. His creative process is unique as well. He doesn’t start with a specific melody or lyrics. Rather he starts with a feeling and a beat and lets that dictate what gets created. It allows him to make something special from an authentic place rather than a formula. To get the creative juices flowing, or when he feels things are getting too stressful he likes to take a vacation to an unusual environment where he is free to experience new things and tap into other parts of himself.

How it’s going

Harris has had some great moments in his career so far. Studied under songwriter Kap G, collaborated with Canadian rap star Preme on “Tell Somebody”, as well legendary rnb group Jagged Edge on “Let Me Know”. Additionally, He and Preme have a long-standing friendship and Preme has been a great coach/adviser to Harris

That being said, Harris is focused on being in charge of his career specifically from a creative standpoint. Making the kind of music he wants to while honing his image and remaining unique and taking risks. He has become a featured artist of RBCxMusic. They are providing a platform for artists to showcase their talents, tell their stories, and reach new fans. Harris believes in the 6 months he has been a featured artist they have given him more stage time as well as introduced him to a wider audience and looks forward to continuing working with them.

What’s Next

For the remainder of 2023, Harris is laser-focused on continuing the momentum he has going. He will be releasing more new music by the fall. He also recently headlined at the Velvet Underground in Toronto. “Having fans stream something I create is so incredible to me and makes all the hard work worth it”.

In the coming years, Harris is aiming for larger crows and bigger venues. He’s also looking to take his talents internationally. He wants to buy his Mom a house as cliched as that sounds and on-board other talents. In order to keep himself in a healthy mental state Harris reminds himself how blessed he is to be doing what he loves. Enjoying the success he is already experiencing.

Sage Harris has the right attitude, temperament, passion, and immense talent to realize all his dreams. This is one rising Canadian star to keep a close eye on.

In a short window of time, Shein has become one of the fastest-growing companies in the world. A household brand name with a constant overhaul of inventory, the company moves at breakneck speeds. Gent’s Post had the opportunity to sit down with Peter Pernot-Day, Shein’s Global Head of Strategy and Corporate Affairs, to talk about how they became the giant they are.

The backstory

Shein was founded in 2008 by American-born Chris Xu in Nanjing China. The company, which is now headquartered in Singapore, has grown to become the largest global online-only retail store in 15 short years. The target audience of the brand is teens and young adults, and their audience absolutely loves them. Shein manages to make fast trending high-quality fashion within three days and sell it at a very accessible price for an audience who buys in volumes. They list anywhere between 500-2000 new items on their website daily. This feeds the ravenous appetite of their customers who have to stay fashion-forward for their off and online lives.

In a demonstration of how they are outpacing their competition, Shein has seen 229 million app downloads. Their closest counterpart, legacy brand H&M, receives 124 million meanwhile Zara sits at 91 million. In 2021, Shein became the most downloaded shopping app on iOS and Android in America beating Amazon. With an impact like that, the question begs, how do they do it?

How they do it

The key component, according to Permot-Day, is the passion of the global teams that believe in what Shein is about. The ethos is based on the premise to make immediate fashion accessible. “Fashion is about self-expression and aesthetic communication. It is where the individual can express themself in their public space in a way that is dramatic and speaks about them”. Shein uses their platform to take the opposite approach of mainstream fashion avenues. Using agile production, they can produce a huge variety of clothing for a huge variety of tastes. Self-expression is thus actualized through their marriage of technology and production.

Sustainability

A global fashion brand producing the quantity of products Shein does daily raises questions around sustainability. Generally, companies like this see up to 30% go to waste but Permot-Day states the opposite is true for Shein. He notes the company produces 100 to 200 pockets of each design for their global markets. This means when it’s sold they only make more based on product demand in order to reduce waste. As for post-consumption, they have a few unique strategies to combat that. Deadstock rescue is one such program. It ensures fabrics and other material that aren’t used in the production gets picked up by a company and through a database shared with other manufacturers. Allowing products to be repurposed rather than going to garbage heaps or dumpsites.

In addition, they also developed the Shein X concept. The program allows young designers to create using Shein’s well-oiled manufacturing, materials, marketing, and selling system. This also helps eliminates waste and promotes sustainability as the guesswork and overproduction through faulty prediction gets eliminated. Further, they have the Shein Exchange which is a network where customers get to sell their gently used Shein items to new customers again keeping waste to a minimum. These are just some of the concepts and processes being implemented and more being explored.

What’s next?

In January 2023, Permot-Day took over as Shein’s Global Head of Strategy and Corporate Affairs. Prior to that he had been with the company since 2021 in a different capacity. Under his leadership, he plans to continue to build upon the Shein ethos. “At the core, Shein was founded to make fashion accessible for everyone,” he notes.

Permot-Day believes they should follow what their customers want, rather than asking them to follow any specific designer. Ryan Gosling is always a good representative for Canada. Good looks, suave, damn good acting chops and the man knows how to show up on a red carpet. Whether it’s rocking Gucci at the Lost River Premiere or his famous pink pants moment on The Gray Man red carpet, Gosling knows what to do. Gosling gets it and he stole the red carpet at the Barbie premiere looking pink panther smooth in a Gucci blush pink suit accessorized with a necklace with his wife’s (Eva Mendes) initial.

Tyler James Williams

Everybody might have hated ‘Chris’ but everyone sure does love Tyler. The actor that gained fame as the main in Chris Rock’s childhood recount, Everybody Hates Chris, has glowed up. The now Golden Globe-winning actor on Abbot Elementary has an eclectic style sense that just works for him. Shorter Jackets with wide-bottom pants that most men can only try to pull of, but Tyler owns. James redefines Hollywood sheek. This award season he showed up and showed out. His most notable Golden Awards saw him take the statue while out-styling everyone never forgetting his signature brooch accessory.

Michael B Jordan

There is a reason he was named the sexiest man alive by People. Whether as the infamous Killmonger or champion Creed, Michael B. owns any lens he shows up on. At the 2023 Oscars, the mega-star wowed in a Double-breasted Louis Vuitton suit with his signature smile and added a pop with his lapel decorated with a pair of Tiffany & Co.’s Bird on a Rock Brooches — one made with a pink morganite stone and the other a green tourmaline — both with diamond birds perched on top.

Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy is that actor that just keeps acting his ass off and putting out good work. He made his role as Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders legendary. His style on that show was always the chef’s kiss and he never disappoints on his red carpet outings. The actor who used his steel blue eyes as the main accessory showed out in a sheer Saint Laurent all-black look. Owning the red carpets in a way that would make Thomas Shelby proud. Also, the boots deserve a special note.

Taiki Waititi

This Oscar and Grammy-winning blockbuster director, actor, and comedian has quietly racked up red-carpet wins. Notably, his MetGala look was top-tier. Wearing Atelier Prabal Gurung, the man dripped cool opulence. Wearing a floor-length gunmetal blazer without a shirt, matched with white trousers. Waititi, elegantly draped two long pearl necklaces and a large black floral corsage. Again, the accessories always matter as do the patent leather shoe he completed the look with.

Manu Rios

Spanish model and Netflix international star Manu Rios is an ‘Elite’ star. There is no occasion that he shows up on a red carpet and does not garner all attention. At Cannes, he simply conquered in this Saint Laurent and Cartier look. The sheer white top, the flared high-waisted satin black pants, and the coup de grace, the Cartier diamond necklace was simply a flawless victory.

Donald Glover

Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino aka Mr.Atlanta comes with more hyphens than should be legal in one body. Rapper, writer, producer, director, and actor and the man does them all at an award-winning level. He is about to release the Mr. & Mrs. Smith spy series starring himself on Amazon Prime. Outside of the many hats he wears, Glover’s style game is something exceptional and many times way outside the norms but perfectly executed. His look at the 2023 Vanity Fair Oscar party was no exception. Rocking a grey Alexander McQueen no-back suit style wide pant jumper was a showstopper. His salt-and-pepper beard is the best accessory to complete the look. It screamed I’m confident in who I am and I don’t walk within the lines.

There is a reason Shawn Carter aka HOV aka Jay-Z is the G.O.A.T of rap music. Notably, he made history by being the first black man to reach a 10 multi-platinum albums milestone. He also just gave us a unique insight into the why and the how. He did so when he recently released Jay-Z: The Book of HOV a chronology exhibition of his music career. Let’s explore some of the history of the greatest rapper of all time.

How it started

The Brooklyn legend burst onto the music scene in 1996 with his debut album Reasonable Doubt. It was not a huge commercial success but critics could not stop talking about the lyrical content and easy flow of the rapper. However, that album is now considered a classic and has stood the test of time. It started what would become Jay-Z’s calling card, him rapping on the spot. He never writes down a lyric. He does it all in his head and delivers it in the recording booth from memory. The artist would release an incredible one album per year until he announced retirement while sitting on top of the music charts in 2003.

With each album, the mega force of HOV’s influence grew, as each other album debuted at number one. That led to him being the rapper with the most number-one albums of all time. As mentioned, he retired in 2003 after releasing The Black Album, considered by many to be the perfect rap album. That retirement lasted 3 years before he came back like a typhoon with The BluePrint, which was immediately deemed a classic. His last solo effort was 4:44. Jay-Z is the 1st rap artist to be inducted in the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. Currently, he holds an incredible 23 Grammys among many other music awards.

I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, man!

While Jay-Z has had a widely successful music career envied by many, it is his business acumen that sets him apart. He is now a multi-billionaire according to Forbes. Starting with Roc-A-Fella, the record label he co-owned that developed into what is now the juggernaut Roc-Nation. Jay-Z understood ownership is power. Roc-Nation is now a record label, a sports agency with clients like Lebron James, and a tv/film production company.

Again, he understood the power of ownership so invested heavily in companies like Uber in its early stages and then bought ownership into The Brooklyn Nets. He bought the streaming music service Tidal, grew it then sold it to Twitter’s Jack Dorsey for $300 million. He had a disagreement with Crystal, so he bought into a lesser-known brand Ace of Spades, grew along with the cognac Dusse and then sold to LMVH for an impressive $640 million. The man just understands how to parley his influence in making critical money moves. As well as investments he does through his venture capital company Marcy Venture Projects.

Philanthropy

As he builds wealth, Jay-Z is just as committed to philanthropic causes. Through his Shawn Carter Foundation, he is constantly donating to HBCUs, his ‘About Love’ scholarships benefit many students who pursue the arts in major universities across the US. He pours funds into many social justice causes as well as GLAAD, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, United Way, and Keep Music Alive to name a few.

Jay-:Z The Book of HOV exhibition is at the Brooklyn Library until the fall. Heavy is the crown of the G.O.A.T, but Jay-Z seems to have been built for this.

Wimbledon is the largest and most prestigious tennis event of the year. It is the premier event that all tennis players dream of competing in. It can jump start your career or put you among the elite. What it also does is draw a huge audience. Take a look at the seats and you won’t find it difficult to spot a number of celebrities and one thing you’ll notice, they certainly dress to impress. Ralph Lauren

The iconic Ralph Lauren seemed to be the brand of choice for several gents in attendance including Nick Jonas, Tom Hiddleston, Jonathan Bayleaf, and the legendary style king David Beckham. All looked dapper in the brand. Rocking traditional tans, creams, and white and navy colours. The men looked great.

Double-breasted

The Gents did not disappoint demonstrating exactly how to rock the peak lapel double-breasted look. Swinging through was Andrew Garfield with F1 driver Pierre Grasly roaring in. Not to be outdone, was the Asgardian himself Tim Hiddleston, and giving a true fashionable serve was Korean super-star Kim Woo-bin, whose grey loafers were the chef’s kiss.

Athlete and Style Icon

There are few men on the planet that are nearly as equally respected and revered for their amazing athletic abilities and near-flawless sense of style. David Beckham embodies this incredibly. Looking magazine perfect in Ralph Lauren and perfectly accessorized, the dapper gent was once again at the top of the class.

Just Different

The great thing about style is that everyone can rock their unique vibe. Rap star Skepta came out in all cream with a monogrammed RL linen shirt in a relaxed vibe but with simple gold accessories and the well-placed suede ticket hat for a bit of whimsy.

Social Media super influencers and models Nic Kaufman and Nils Kuesel were also standouts. Nic giving us 80’s Ivy League college boy and Nils suave in the light blue double-breasted suit with the addition of the dope bow tie. The stylish men of Wimbledon 2023 did not disappoint all understood that the right accessories complete a great look.
