In the quiet, picturesque setting of a West Coast cabin, we sat down with George C. Reifel, the 2nd, (referred to as George Sr.) and his son, George F. Reifel (referred to as George Jr.), who carry the legacy of a gentleman who profoundly influenced Canadian distilling. Though neither of them has worked in the whisky business, their pride in the impact their father and grandfather, George H. Reifel, had on the industry is unmistakable. Launched nearly two years ago in 2022, Reifel Rye pays homage to this legacy, even as the brand itself is still in its infancy. What we didn’t realize at first was really how deep those roots are–dating back to the 20th century prohibition era, that is.

While Reifel Rye is a relatively new name on the market, the Reifel family’s roots in the distilling industry run deep. The story begins with George H. Reifel’s father, George C. Reifel and grandfather, Henry Reifel, who were significant figures in Vancouver’s rum-running scene during the Prohibition era. But it was George H. Reifel, son of George C. Reifel, the 1st, who would go on to pioneer rye whisky distilling in Calgary, Alberta, founding Alberta Distillers Ltd. in 1946. This distillery quickly became one of the most respected names in Canadian whisky, and today, Reifel Rye serves as a tribute to the man who started it all.

A legacy beyond the business: 5 generations of Reifel

The Reifel family’s history in the alcohol industry is aged in rich tradition, beginning with the shadowy days of rum-running under Henry and George C. Reifel’s leadership. The family made a significant mark during the Prohibition era, but their influence continued beyond those years. George H. Reifel, eventually was approached by his co-founders to found Alberta Distillers Ltd., carrying the family legacy forward by establishing a respected rye whisky tradition in Alberta. His impact on the industry is still felt today, even though the Reifel family no longer runs the business. Now owned and operated by the global brand of Suntory Global Spirits. 

A Father and Son’s perspective

For George Sr. and George Jr., witnessing the launch of Reifel Rye has been a deeply personal experience. Though they never worked directly in the business, their connection to their family’s history is strong. “Having the Reifel name on it is a huge honour,” George Sr. shares. “They’re honouring the gentleman who was involved with the creation of Alberta Distillers (and a distilling pioneer)—my father and George’s grandfather. That’s a big honour to us, and it’s a legacy we wanted to support.”

Sitting in a warm and cozy looking room, of what looked like a wooden cabin, the pride they feel in their family’s history is palpable. George Jr., who never had the chance to meet his grandfather, found an unexpected connection through this project. “It feels good. It’s certainly something that I’m proud of. I think it’s a really interesting piece of history for our family,” George Jr. reflects. “I got to learn a lot more about him and the history of the family that I probably wouldn’t have known otherwise.”

A product that reflects a gent’s spirit

Reifel Rye is more than just a whisky—it is a reflection of the man it honours. George H. Reifel, known for his adventurous spirit and deep respect for Canada’s natural abundance. This is captured in the whisky itself, crafted from Canadian prairie rye, 100% pot distilled, and aged in new charred white oak and ex-bourbon barrels. The result is a complex and spicy spirit, boasting notes of toffee, banana bread, chocolate, poached pear, and crème brûlée—rightfully earning the moniker: Feast of a Whisky.

For George Sr. and George Jr., their involvement in the project, even from a distance, has been about ensuring that the final product is something their forebear would be proud of. “Ultimately, the most important thing for myself, and I know for my dad as well,” George Jr. shares, “is that it’s something my grandfather would be proud of.” And by all accounts, Reifel Rye has lived up to this standard, receiving enthusiastic responses from friends, family, and whisky connoisseurs alike. The already award-winning spirit has received international accolades including Gold at the SIP Awards 2022 and Gold at the International Spirits Challenge 2022.

While Reifel Rye is certainly a top-shelf sipping whisky, there are many ways to enjoy it, each reflecting a different aspect of its rich flavour profile. George Sr. emphasizes its quality as a sipping whisky, ideal for enjoying neat or on the rocks—a serve that’s fondly dubbed “Reifel on the Rockies.” Meanwhile, George Jr., representing the younger generation, enjoys Reifel Rye in a Rye Manhattan, highlighting its versatility in classic cocktails. For those who appreciate a refreshing twist, Reifel Rye can also be savoured in a Reifel Sour, further showcasing its adaptability.

Honouring the legacy, through Reifel Rye

Although the Reifel family no longer controls Alberta Distillers Ltd., the legacy of George H. Reifel within the company remains strong. The transition of the distillery into the hands of Suntory Global Spirits  has not diminished the pride the family feels in seeing their name on a product that embodies the principles George H. Reifel stood for—quality, craftsmanship, and a pioneering spirit.

As they continue to share Reifel Rye with friends and family, George Sr. and George Jr. act as informal ambassadors for the brand, spreading the word about a whisky that represents so much more than just a drink. “We’ve converted a lot of Scotch drinkers,” George Sr. says with a smile. “It’s certainly a top-shelf product, and we want people to enjoy it as a high-level quality whisky—not your typical rye and coke off the tailgate of a truck.”

A future rooted in the past

Looking forward, the Reifel family hopes to see Reifel Rye continue to grow and reach new audiences, both in Canada and beyond. “We’d like to see it continue,” George Sr. shares. “We’ve got friends in the U.S. who are eager to get their hands on it, and while that’s a question for Alberta Distillers  and Suntory Global Spirits, we’re doing our part to be ambassadors.”

As the interview concluded, it was clear that for the Reifel family, Reifel Rye is more than just a business venture—it’s a continuation of a legacy that began with rum-running on the West Coast and evolved into a respected distilling tradition in Alberta. It’s a whisky that honours the past while looking toward the future, and for George Sr. and George Jr., that’s something worth celebrating.

Reifel Rye is currently available across Canada, retailing at about $50 CAD per bottle (varies by province) with distribution through major liquor stores such as the LCBO, SAQ, and BC Liquor Stores. For those in other provinces, it’s worth checking your local retailers. George Sr. has often expressed his aspiration to see Reifel Rye reach the U.S. market one day, sharing that friends and neighbors south of the border are eager to get their hands on it. While distribution in the U.S. is yet to be realized, George Sr. remains hopeful that it will soon become a reality, allowing more whisky enthusiasts to experience the legacy that Reifel Rye represents.

Dr. Goldbloom’s extensive experience and insight into mental health made for an enlightening conversation. We delved into various aspects of mental health, breaking down stigmas and providing valuable information for those struggling with mental illness. Understanding the state of mental health today

Dr. Goldbloom began by reflecting on his 40-year career, noting significant progress in addressing mental health issues. “I’ve seen a lot of change. The needle has moved quite significantly in terms of fighting stigma, improving understanding, compassion, commitment, and support for mental illness,” he shared. Despite these advancements, he acknowledged that much work remains to be done to meet the needs of the one in five Canadians who experience mental illness or substance use issues annually.

The pervasive impact of mental illness

One of the most striking points Dr. Goldbloom made was about the widespread impact of mental illness. “There’s nobody who can honestly stand up and say not my family, not my siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, spouse, children, or myself. Nobody’s been affected,” he emphasized. This universality makes it all the more important to address mental health openly and without shame.

Differentiating sadness from depression

A significant part of our conversation focused on understanding depression. Dr. Goldbloom explained the difference between feeling sad and being clinically depressed. “If you ask somebody who has struggled with depression, what’s the difference between feeling sad and feeling depressed, they can tell you in a heartbeat. When I’m feeling depressed, I just don’t feel anything. I feel flat, empty, and hopeless,” he explained. This distinction is crucial in recognizing when someone may need professional help.

The silent struggle and stigma

Dr. Goldbloom highlighted the persistent stigma surrounding mental illness and its roots in fear and misunderstanding. He pointed out that historically, there has been a “conspiracy of silence” around mental illness, making it difficult for individuals to seek help. “When your mind is broken, when your brain is not working properly, are you, still you? This has the potential to disrupt how you see that person or how you see yourself,” he noted.

Recognizing and addressing mental health issues

For those unsure if they or someone they know is experiencing a mental illness, Dr. Goldbloom offered practical advice. “One of the advantages of people who know someone who may be struggling with depression, is that you’re going to notice changes in them that they may not be aware, of themselves,” he said. He encouraged having meaningful conversations and being persistent in offering support.

The heavy cost of depression

Dr. Goldbloom discussed the significant impact of depression on individuals and workplaces. “Depression is going to be the leading cause of disability worldwide by 2030,” he stated. He emphasized that depression disrupts various aspects of life, including sleep, appetite, energy, interest, and cognitive functions like motivation and concentration.

The good news: Treatability of depression

Despite the daunting statistics, Dr. Goldbloom reassured listeners that depression is highly treatable. “We have over half a century of evidence that treatments for depression work, whether they are psychological treatments, behavioral activation and exercise treatments, or modern antidepressant medications,” he affirmed. This message is crucial for those feeling hopeless about their condition.

Supporting loved ones with mental illness

Dr. Goldbloom also provided guidance on supporting friends or family members with mental illness. He stressed the importance of having a prepared, confidential conversation and being persistent in offering help. “If you’re a real friend, you have to stand your ground,” he advised, emphasizing the need to be a supportive and persistent presence.

Addressing common misconceptions about schizophrenia

A significant portion of our discussion focused on schizophrenia. Dr. Goldbloom debunked common myths, noting that people with schizophrenia are more likely to be victimized than to victimize others. “For most people with schizophrenia, they look nothing like what you see on CSI,” he clarified. He described the symptoms and experiences of those with schizophrenia, painting a more accurate picture of this complex illness.

Our conversation with Dr. David Goldbloom was enlightening and inspiring. His expertise and compassion shone through as he addressed the complexities of mental health. The early days of chef Antonio Park: Cultivating a love for food

Antonio Park’s journey into the culinary world began at a young age. Growing up in Argentina, he was immersed in a vibrant and industrious environment where his parents ran a laundromat business. “My parents used to do floating acid stonewashed jeans. In the 70s and 80s, remember like Rijn Wrangler, they have these soft spots on the jeans, and that’s what my parents used to do,” Antonio recounted. Amidst the hustle and bustle of their business, his mother cooked meals for the entire staff, fostering a sense of community and family.

This environment sparked chef Antonio Park’s interest in food. He recalled, “I was in charge of going there and picking up things. Making sure that, you know, I choose the right onions, garlic, cucumber, watermelon, carrots, mango, you name it… That’s where it really started.” This hands-on experience with fresh produce and communal cooking laid the foundation for his culinary passion.

From dishwasher to celebrated chef

Antonio’s path to becoming a renowned celebrity chef was not without its challenges. He started his career humbly, working as a dishwasher. “I don’t know if I was thinking, ‘I’m gonna work my way up.’ My life was never like that. My life was like, just put whatever in front of me, and I’ll just try to do my best,” he shared. This relentless work ethic and dedication to excellence translated into a successful career.

He emphasized the importance of discipline and perseverance, drawing from his own experiences. “If you’re a dishwasher, be the best dishwasher. If I have to clean the cups and, you know, clean the wineglasses, clean the tables, clean the dishes, clean a fish, harvest something, you know, I just want to do the best job that I can,” Antonio stated, highlighting his philosophy of excelling in every role he undertook.

Building a family through food

For Antonio, food is not just about sustenance; it’s about building relationships and creating a sense of family. He spoke passionately about the importance of communal meals, both in his upbringing and in his restaurants. “I try to do everything that I can to bring that community back, that family back together,” he said, reflecting on the decline of family dinners in modern society. Antonio strives to instill this culture in his restaurants, encouraging his team to eat together and bond over shared meals.

Navigating failures and successes

Antonio’s journey has seen its fair share of failures, but he views them as invaluable learning experiences. “I failed. I failed some of them dramatically… But at the end of the day, I take it as everything is my fault. Because it’s my project,” he admitted. One notable setback was losing $1.8 million in six months on a business venture. Despite the financial loss, Antonio remains resilient and positive, saying, “You can’t change the past. You can change today and tomorrow.”

His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to embrace risk and learn from their mistakes. “Take that risk… If you’re bleeding a lot in a business, and you’re stressed every day, you can’t sleep, you’re not being a good father, a good husband, a good wife, or anything, give up, move on and build something else,” he advised.

Embracing authenticity and mentoring the next generation

One particularly unique project is a street dinner in Yorkville, Toronto, in collaboration with artist Dan Pham. “We’re doing a dinner on the street of Yorkville for 40 people with an artist called Dan Pham from Dallas,” he revealed, highlighting his commitment to blending art and cuisine.
