Confidence is one of the most vital traits a man can possess. It affects every area of life, from career to relationships, and how you handle life’s challenges. But confidence isn’t something you’re just born with — it’s built over time through intentional actions, self-awareness, and consistent personal growth. If you’re wondering how to build confidence as a man, here are seven practical strategies to help you get started.

See also: Gents, let’s talk mental health

1. Set and achieve small goals

Building confidence starts with proving to yourself that you can achieve what you set out to do. Start by setting small, realistic goals that are achievable in your daily life. These could be anything from sticking to a workout routine to learning a new skill. Every time you accomplish one of these goals, your brain registers it as a success, and your self-confidence grows.

2. Take care of your physical health

Physical health is directly tied to mental and emotional well-being. Regular exercise, a balanced diet and adequate sleep aren’t just important for your body, but also for your mind. When you feel strong and energized, it’s easier to face life’s challenges with a positive attitude. You don’t need to aim for perfection; even small improvements in your physical health can boost your confidence significantly.

3. Embrace failure as part of growth

Failure is inevitable in life, but it’s how you respond to it that defines your confidence. Instead of fearing failure, see it as a learning opportunity. Successful men often fail multiple times before achieving their goals, and each failure teaches valuable lessons. Embracing setbacks and viewing them as stepping stones helps build resilience, which is crucial for lasting self-esteem.

4. Develop a growth mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that you can improve through effort and learning. Instead of focusing on fixed traits or past mistakes, cultivate the attitude that your abilities and intelligence can grow over time. This mindset fosters continuous improvement and keeps you from being too hard on yourself, thus helping to build lasting confidence.

5. Surround yourself with positive influences

The people you spend time with have a profound impact on your confidence. Surround yourself with individuals who uplift, encourage, and challenge you to be your best self. Positive influences can help you see your potential, while toxic or negative people can drain your self-esteem. Evaluate your social circle and prioritize relationships that nourish your confidence.

6. Improve your body language

Non-verbal communication can play a huge role in how confident you feel and appear. Stand tall, make eye contact, and maintain an open posture. Even when you don’t feel confident, adopting strong body language can help you project confidence, which in turn reinforces how you feel inside. Over time, these small changes in posture and expression can lead to a real boost in self-esteem.

7. Practice self-compassion

Being kind to yourself is essential for building confidence. Men are often taught to be hard on themselves and to suppress emotions, but self-compassion leads to a healthier, more balanced outlook. Acknowledge your imperfections, treat yourself with kindness, and forgive your mistakes. This practice not only reduces self-criticism but also fosters a deep, lasting sense of inner strength.

Building confidence as a man requires time, patience, and consistent effort. By setting achievable goals, embracing growth, and cultivating positive habits, you can foster a sense of self-worth that stands strong in the face of life’s challenges. Confidence is not a destination but a journey — one that you can embark on at any stage of life.

Over the last couple of years I’ve had the opportunity to travel to some incredible destinations across the globe. From Nassau to Barcelona and Reykjavik in between, I’ve gotten my share of nature and urban cities. But nothing prepared me for the natural wonders and beauty that lay in my own Canadian backyard. But for this adventure, I wanted to push myself further—to navigate these raw landscapes and truly experience the wilderness. So it was only fitting that my adventure to the picturesque Canadian outdoors came at the invitation of Citizen Watch Canada, a brand synonymous with pushing boundaries. The task was straightforward…to go beyond. To go further.

Arriving at CMH Bugaboos Lodge

The Canadian Rockies stretch across western Canada, their jagged peaks rising like ancient guardians of the wild. For adventurers, this is sacred ground—a place where nature’s beauty and power come together in awe-inspiring harmony. Equipped with my gear, a sense of excitement, and a solid companion—my Citizen Promaster Skyhawk A-T, I was ready for whatever the Rockies had in store. The watch wasn’t just a style choice; it was an essential part of my expedition.

My journey started at the highly regarded CMH Bugaboos Lodge. As the helicopter descended toward the lodge, nestled deep in the heart of the Bugaboo Provincial Park, my anticipation surged. The lodge itself felt like something out of a dream, tucked into the base of towering granite spires that reached toward the sky. It’s one of the most remote and exclusive lodges in the Rockies, renowned for its luxury and proximity to some of the most breathtaking terrain in the world.

I stepped off the helicopter into the crisp, cool mountain air. Immediately, the grandeur of the landscape hit me—soaring glaciers, pristine valleys, and rugged mountain faces. The Bugaboos are famous for their remoteness, but the lodge itself offered a cozy haven with the finest amenities. After a hearty meal and orientation with our guides, I prepared for the first adventure—a trek across the terrain. Back into the heli we went and up and away but despite how much higher we climbed, the peaks didn’t get that much smaller. A reminder of how big they are and more importantly, how small we really are.

Heli hiking

I recall stepping out of the chopper on top of the mountain, getting my bearings (heli’s take a few trips to adjust to) and now I was ready. The group that had arrived prior to mine was already taking selfies, videos and producing a particular tik tok trend. It wasn’t until I looked in the opposite direction that I stopped in my tracks and lost my words. As a podcaster, you never lose your words. It was like something I’d seen on computer screensavers as a kid. Breathtaking.

image: samir mourani on top of a ridge; credit william drumm

After snapping some photos and some vids, so I can show off on my socials of course, it was time to go on our first official trek. My guide Roko, of whom no amount of description could do justice to the character that he is, decided for the “fast” group, he was going to run. I thought he was joking. Roko started running. First lesson.

I must also admit, I didn’t realize how much harder it is to run at that altitude and suddenly I questioned my decision to have that extra loaf of bread. Rookie mistake. Second lesson. After stopping to take in the epic views at the top of our trek, we noticed a natural lake built into the mountains at a distance. One we’d visit a few days later. But the main lesson of the day was one I’d never forget. Stand a full body’s length away from the edge. Because if you’re too close and you find yourself losing your footing, well… “you’re fucking golden” as Roko would say.

A reliable companion: The Citizen Promaster Skyhawk A-T

I’ve been on several brand trips before and the ones that stand out are the ones that put the product to the test in the environment they are meant to be in. So before setting out, I took a moment to check my Citizen Promaster Skyhawk A-T. This beautifully crafted piece of wristwear was to be my companion for the trip. As a multi-functional watch designed for adventure, it offered absolute precision, look and feel. The type to suit any modern gent.

The Eco-Drive technology was especially useful, as it runs on light, meaning I didn’t have to worry about charging or changing batteries—an essential feature for a multi-day mountain adventure. With its super titanium case, it remained lightweight but durable, ensuring that it could withstand any accidental knocks, and believe me, there were several. It felt like I was wearing more than just a watch, it was a swiss-army knife on my wrist and I was prepared to take on the challenges ahead.

Promasters in the wild

It’s not everyday you get to trek through the Canadian rockies at crazy high altitudes with beautiful scenery. It’s even less likely you’ll get to do it while surrounded by some of the world’s greatest adventure seekers and trendsetters.

Image: L-R Jeff Shapiro, William Drumm, Jody Macdonald, Will Gadd; image by troy barmore

Let’s start by getting formal introductions out of the way. Jeff Shapiro is a wingsuit pilot…I could stop there but it goes on. He’s a rock climber and paraglider. William Drumm is a world renowned diver with significant expeditions under his belt including some work with Billie Eilish. Jody MacDonald is an award-winning adventure photographer and explorer known for capturing images off the beaten path. Finally is Will Gadd, a legendary Canadian climber, paraglider and world record holder. When you’re surrounded by this caliber of people, it’s not hard to be sucked into their world and just listen as they talk about the challenges and hurdles they’ve overcome over years of honing their craft. If these legends decided to join forces and become Promasters, it should tell you something. They embodied what Citizen stands for. Going further, deeper and beyond.

The Ascent: Climbing Through the Clouds

As we ascended higher into the Rockies, the terrain shifted from soft alpine meadows to jagged rock formations. It was tough going, but the rewards were worth it: shimmering alpine lakes that mirrored the surrounding peaks and untouched valleys. After hours of hiking, we reached a high ridge that offered unparalleled panoramic views. The horizon seemed endless, with glaciers glinting in the sunlight and distant peaks disappearing into the clouds. This was the essence of adventure—being surrounded by something far greater than yourself.

credit: Garrett Jones of Worn & Wound

My Skyhawk, with its anti-reflective sapphire crystal dial, remained clear and readable even in the bright alpine sun. Its water resistant nature soon to be tested by mountain weather. This would later come in handy – read on to find out about an unexpected 6 hour trek in the pouring rain.

2 hours away from being 2 hours away

On what ended up being the last hike of this adventure, a group of us, guide included (Roko of course), decided to take an easy trek. One, maybe two hours of hiking before the heli would pick us back up. Except as soon as we landed and the heli flew off, there was something eerie about the clouds quickly converging over us. Not long after, downpour. Thus began what would be the most challenging part of this journey.

image: (L) will gadd (R) Tyson Apostol canyoning; image credit troy barmore

The only way back was through. Through the mountain wilderness, the wet ground beneath and the miserable grey that covered us. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. I wasn’t worried about the physical, it was a mental game. Can I survive unrelenting conditions with literally no escape option but the path ahead? Every so often Roko would yodel, to which I came to understand was a way to inform any nearby bears that we exist and are trekking through. Did I forget to mention bears? Roko had stopped at one point to intensely scan his surroundings before pulling out his bear spray…uh oh. Suddenly we’re all on high alert and of course in that moment my balance decided to disappear and next thing I know I’m in a pool of water.

credit garrett Jones of worn & wound

Back up and functional, the trek continued. “How much longer?” someone dared ask. “Two hours away” Roko remarked. Except he would later state “we’re about two hours away from being two hours away” half jokingly half serious. At that point the only thing distracting the group was a debate about whether we’d prefer beautifully seasoned and tasty ribs or, my personal favourite, chicken wings back at the lodge. We need to build up a reward for the trek we were on.

By the time we finally returned to the lodge, soaked to the bones, the sun was beginning to set. The long, physically demanding day had given me a deeper appreciation for the Rockies and the unique adventure I was just on. I was miserable, I was angry but I survived. As I shed my gear and looked at the time, my Citizen Promaster Skyhawk A-T reflecting the long journey I was on, reminded me of its durability. Despite being exposed the entirety of the journey, it was the only piece of gear that went unscathed. Couldn’t say the same for my camera…or my phone.

Go beyond

The Rockies demand respect, but they also offer unparalleled rewards for those willing to push beyond their limits. Whether you’re navigating treacherous glaciers or relaxing at the Bugaboos Lodge, the right gear makes all the difference. The Citizen Promaster Skyhawk A-T wasn’t just a watch; it was my reliable companion, offering precision, durability, and style in one. From the breathtaking peaks of the Canadian Rockies to the everyday city hustle, this watch is built for adventure. It serves as a reminder that, like the mountains themselves, life is best when you’re fully prepared and ready to embrace the unknown.

The Citizen way

In 2023, I participated in a similar trip with Citizen in Nassau. We took the slogan of go deeper quite literal as we went diving with sharks in the ocean. Yes you read that right. I recall receiving the press guide with shark info and thinking to myself – it’s best not to think about it. There are brands that say they want to push the limits and then there are even fewer brands that PUSH the limits. Citizen is one of those brands.

image: (L) Samir Mourani, (R) Zahra Hemraj; credit troy barmore

So when Zahra Hemraj, the Director of Marketing & Data Integration, sent me a text asking me how I felt about hiking in the Rockies, I knew it was going to push my limits again. When she sent the press materials and included several pages about bear awareness…well I reminded myself it was best not to think about it. This was the adventure of a lifetime. A perfect blend of exploration, relaxation and incredible humans. Thank you Citizen, thank you Zahra, thank you to the CMH guides who made taking care of a group of first-timers look effortless.

Image: the promaster citizen watch press team

I packed my bags, said my goodbyes and hopped onto the heli but not before one last look at the screensaver. I’ll be back soon. When I am, you can bet I’ll have my wrist gear ready to go with me.

October 10th marks World Mental Health Day, a vital day dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for mental health issues worldwide. It’s a reminder of the importance of mental well-being and the need for support and open conversations. For men, in particular, this day highlights the importance of challenging cultural norms and stereotypes that often discourage us from speaking about our mental health.

See also: Movember: Changing the face of men’s health one ‘MO’ at a time

The stigma surrounding men’s mental health

For generations, men have been taught that strength means stoicism. They are often encouraged to be the “rock” for their families, friends, and communities—strong, silent, and impervious to emotional distress. This conditioning has created a stigma around men’s mental health, where vulnerability is mistakenly equated with weakness. Consequently, many men feel they must face their struggles alone, leading to a reluctance to seek help or talk about what they are going through.

The statistics paint a worrying picture. Research shows that men are less likely than women to seek mental health support. In many countries, suicide rates are significantly higher among men, especially those aged 45 and older. These numbers indicate a deeper, systemic issue: a culture that often fails to provide men with the space and acceptance to be emotionally vulnerable.

Why world mental health day matters

World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to shatter these harmful stereotypes and promote healthier attitudes toward mental health, particularly for men. It’s a day that underscores the importance of reaching out and connecting—two powerful actions that can break down the barriers that prevent men from seeking support.

By encouraging men to open up, the day serves as a reminder that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a display of courage. Talking about struggles, anxieties, and fears requires immense strength, and when men do so, they not only begin their own healing process but also inspire others around them to do the same. It’s about shifting the narrative and creating an environment where men feel safe to express themselves without judgment.

Let’s talk masculinity…

On October 18th, Movember is hosting an in-person panel in Toronto at the Globe and Mail Centre. I will be moderating the panel consisting of Tychon Carter, Dr. Ellen Choi & JP Saxe to talk about modern masculinity and the role it plays in shaping men today. This is a free event and open to the public with the intention of promoting healthy masculinity and talking about men’s mental health. For those who cannot attend, the panel is being taped and will be published as part of a Gent’s Talk episode in November. Tickets can be found here.

The power of talking and sharing

Opening up to someone about your struggles can be an incredibly healing act. Studies show that simply talking about one’s feelings can reduce the intensity of emotional pain. When men engage in honest conversations about their mental health, they often experience relief, clarity, and a sense of connection. This is because sharing with someone else breaks the cycle of isolation, one of the most dangerous aspects of struggling with mental health issues.

Unfortunately, many men believe that their problems are a burden to others or that no one will understand. This mindset perpetuates isolation and makes reaching out seem daunting. World Mental Health Day is a powerful reminder that there are people who care and want to listen—whether that’s a friend, a family member, or a mental health professional.

Moreover, talking openly about mental health creates a ripple effect. When one man speaks up, it encourages others to follow suit. It normalizes these conversations, showing that it’s okay to not be okay. By using platforms like social media or participating in local community events on this day, men can be part of a movement that breaks down stigma and fosters a supportive environment for mental health discussions.

Practical steps for men to take on World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day isn’t just about raising awareness; it’s about taking action. Men can use this day as a starting point for making positive changes in their mental well-being and encouraging others to do the same. Here are some practical steps:

  1. Reach Out: Make a point to connect with someone you trust—whether it’s a friend, a family member, or a professional. Opening up, even if it feels uncomfortable at first, is a crucial step toward finding relief and support.
  2. Listen and Support Others: Being a good listener can have a significant impact. If a friend reaches out, offer them your time and attention. Sometimes, just being there for someone else can help you recognize your own need for support.
  3. Engage in Mental Health Initiatives: Participate in events, workshops, or online discussions related to World Mental Health Day. These activities can offer new perspectives and connect you with resources that may be helpful.
  4. Practice Self-Care: Use this day to prioritize self-care. This might mean setting aside time for physical activity, mindfulness, or relaxation—whatever helps you recharge and refocus on your well-being.
  5. Encourage Open Conversations in Your Circles: If you’re comfortable, share your experiences with mental health, either in person or online. Your story could be the encouragement someone else needs to seek help.

Changing the conversation around men’s mental health

World Mental Health Day is about more than just one day of awareness. It’s an opportunity to create lasting change and break down the barriers preventing men from accessing the support they need. The goal is to cultivate a culture where men feel empowered to speak up and seek help, rather than hiding their struggles out of fear of judgment.

Men must know that their feelings are valid and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not failure. By opening up and talking to someone, they are taking a critical step toward mental and emotional well-being. It’s essential that society supports this journey by normalizing vulnerability and building safe spaces for honest conversations.

World Mental Health Day serves as a powerful reminder that mental health is universal and that everyone, regardless of gender, deserves the support and space to heal. For men, this day is an opportunity to reject the old, harmful stereotypes of stoicism and embrace a more open, supportive approach to well-being.

By encouraging men to speak out and share their stories, we can build a world where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health—a world where strength is defined not by silence, but by the courage to be open, honest, and vulnerable.

As part of their 30th Anniversary celebrations, the Toronto Raptors and MLSE Foundation have revitalized the Vince Carter Court in Dixon Park, unveiling it alongside the new Raptors North Legacy Courts, which include two refurbished full courts and two new half courts. This $1 million investment, supported by Canadian Tire Jumpstart, reflects the team’s commitment to empowering Toronto’s youth through basketball.

During the unveiling, the Raptors announced that Vince Carter’s iconic number 15 jersey will be the first in franchise history to be raised to the rafters of Scotiabank Arena in a special ceremony on Saturday, November 2. “The Carter effect is real,” said Raptors Vice-Chairman Masai Ujiri, reflecting on Carter’s profound impact on basketball in Toronto and Canada. “It’s fitting that Vince’s jersey will hang as the first retired in Raptors history.”

Originally built in 2003 by Carter’s Embassy of Hope Foundation, the Vince Carter Court renovation marks his continued legacy in Toronto. Speaking on the honor, Carter expressed gratitude for the city, calling it a “second home,” and looked forward to sharing the jersey retirement moment with Raptors fans.

The Raptors will also pay tribute to Carter’s legendary 2000 NBA Slam Dunk Contest win in February and introduce new uniforms commemorating the anniversary, further cementing Carter’s place in franchise history.

In today’s modern work environment, most of us spend hours sitting at our desks. Whether it’s meetings, emails, or working on projects, long periods of sitting have become the norm. However, recent research shows that sitting for extended periods may not only affect your physical health but also your mental well-being. Enter the standing desk, a dynamic alternative that encourages a healthier and more productive workday.

The science behind sitting & its effects

Sitting for prolonged periods has been associated with a variety of health risks. Some of the most concerning issues include:

image: Athena standing desk in black from rove concepts; product can be found here
  • Increased risk of heart disease: Studies show that sitting for more than eight hours a day can contribute to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Sitting slows down metabolism, which affects the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, blood pressure, and break down body fat, all factors that contribute to heart disease.
  • Poor posture and back pain: Sitting, especially with improper posture, can lead to spine misalignment, tight hips, and weakened core muscles, which can cause chronic lower back pain.
  • Decreased mental health: Research has also linked sedentary behavior to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Long stretches of sitting may reduce the production of endorphins and disrupt mood-regulating hormones.

Given these risks, it’s clear that sitting for long periods isn’t doing our bodies—or minds—any favours. So, what’s the solution?

Why standing desks are a game-changer

Standing desks have risen in popularity in recent years, offering a simple yet effective way to counter the negative effects of sitting. Here are the key benefits of switching to a standing desk:

image: Athena standing desk in white from rove concepts

1. Improves posture

When you stand, your spine naturally aligns, and you are more aware of your posture. This helps reduce the common issues associated with sitting, such as slouching and hunching over your desk. With better posture, you’ll experience fewer aches and pains, particularly in your lower back and shoulders.

2. Boosts energy and mood

Standing while working increases blood flow, which in turn boosts your energy levels. Many users report feeling more alert and focused throughout the day, as well as a noticeable improvement in their overall mood. When you’re not slumped in a chair for hours, your body is more engaged, and this can have a positive effect on mental clarity.

3. Enhances productivity

Standing desks encourage you to move more, whether it’s shifting your weight or stepping away for short breaks. This slight movement helps prevent mental fatigue, allowing you to remain more productive throughout the day. Studies have shown that standing desks can lead to better concentration and increased efficiency at work.

4. Reduces the risk of weight gain

Standing burns more calories than sitting. Even though it may not feel like a workout, standing can help prevent the weight gain that often comes with long hours of sitting. Some studies suggest that standing for an extra three hours per day can burn around 30,000 more calories over the course of a year!

The Athena Standing Desk: The ideal solution for a healthier workspace

If you’re looking to invest in a standing desk that not only delivers functionality but also style, the Athena Standing Desk from Rove Concepts is an excellent choice. It’s not just about making the switch to a healthier workspace—this desk is designed with attention to both aesthetic appeal and practical features that make it a standout in the market.

image: Athena standing desk in white from rove concepts

Most of us have been prioritizing home decor while balancing functionality when it comes to our living spaces. As remote work continues to be a thing (thankfully), having an aesthetically pleasing home office space is essential. If you don’t have the ability to have a private office and have to use a section of your living room, that makes the look and feel of your workspace even more important. Now instead of having the usual basic looking desk fill that ever-important space in your home, why not consider a desk that looks like it’s straight out of a home decor magazine.

The desk is easy to assemble and also comes in two colours. I personally opted for the white base with Alabaster Matte Lacquer wood finish because it fit the rest of the space well. What’s more, the legs scream “look at me”. Like something you’d expect to see on some beautifully designed European building, the aesthetic of this desk is a stand out feature and definitely a conversation starter.

Elegant design meets functionality

The Athena Standing Desk boasts a sleek, minimalist design that fits seamlessly into any modern office. Crafted with premium materials, it exudes luxury while ensuring durability. Available in a variety of finishes, this desk allows you to customize your workspace to suit your personal taste.

Easy-to-use adjustability

What sets the Athena Standing Desk apart is its electric height-adjustable feature. With a simple push of a button, you can switch between sitting and standing, customizing the height to your comfort level. The smooth and quiet motor makes adjustments effortless, so you can transition between positions without interrupting your workflow.

Sustainably crafted

In keeping with the principles of eco-conscious design, the Athena Standing Desk is crafted from sustainably sourced materials. This makes it an excellent choice for those who want to minimize their environmental footprint without compromising on quality.

Incorporating standing into your daily routine

While standing desks offer numerous health benefits, it’s important to transition gradually. Here are some tips to incorporate standing into your workday without overwhelming your body:

  • Start slow: Begin by standing for 15-30 minutes at a time, then gradually increase this duration as your body adapts.
  • Alternate between sitting and standing: A standing desk like the Athena makes it easy to switch between positions, so take advantage of this feature.
  • Use a mat for comfort: Anti-fatigue mats can help alleviate pressure on your feet and legs during long periods of standing.

Gent’s Approved

The benefits of standing desks are undeniable—from improved posture and increased energy to enhanced productivity. If you’re ready to make the switch, consider the Athena Standing Desk by Rove Concepts, a top-tier option that combines luxury, functionality, and health benefits. Standing more throughout the day could be the key to transforming your workspace and boosting both your health and productivity.

The FIFA World Cup is coming to North America in 2026 and while there’s lots to be excited for, there’s still a growing concern over player safety. With that in mind, FIFA, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has launched a global concussion awareness initiative called Suspect and Protect: No Match is Worth the Risk. The campaign highlights the dangers of concussion, a traumatic brain injury, and aims to provide educational resources for everyone involved in football, from players and coaches to medical teams and fans.

Concussions are serious brain injuries…

Developed with expert input from FIFA Medical and WHO brain health specialists, the Suspect and Protect campaign will help players, coaches, and the public recognize concussion symptoms and ensure proper management. FIFA will distribute the campaign’s resources across its 211 Member Associations, making them accessible at the national, regional, and local levels.

“Concussion is a serious brain injury that requires attention at all levels of football,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “By understanding the risks and signs, we can help prioritize player safety in every match.” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus echoed this sentiment: “Concussion is a public health issue across all sports, including football. Our collaboration with FIFA on Suspect and Protect aims to safeguard players of all ages.”

The campaign’s three core messages are:

  1. Be Aware: Everyone involved in football should understand the signs of concussion and treat it seriously.
  2. Suspect: Any player sustaining an impact to the head, neck, or body should be assessed for concussion symptoms, which may take up to 72 hours to appear.
  3. Protect: Players showing symptoms should leave the field immediately and seek medical advice within 24 hours. No match is worth risking long-term health.

With the Suspect and Protect initiative, FIFA and WHO are setting new standards for concussion awareness, aiming to make the game safer for all involved.

Movember, among the world’s leading charities dedicated to improving men’s health, has transformed the way we approach serious issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. Every November, millions of participants worldwide grow out their moustaches—or “Mo”—to spark conversations, raise awareness, and collect funds for these important causes. The movement has gained massive traction since its inception, and Canada has been a key player in the global effort to tackle men’s health challenges.

The power of Movember in Canada

Movember has a strong presence in Canada, kicking off its annual campaign on November 1st, 2007, marking this year as the 18th annual campaign. Since its start, Canadian participants have raised a staggering $362.1 million for men’s health causes, with $22 million raised in 2023 alone.

Movember isn’t just about growing a moustache; it’s about addressing an alarming health crisis. Too many men are suffering from preventable health conditions or dying too young. Globally, men live an average of five years less than women, and suicide rates are tragically high—one man dies by suicide every minute worldwide. In Canada, 1,185 men between the ages of 15 and 54 died by suicide in 2022, meaning nearly three men per day lost their lives to mental health struggles. This isn’t just a statistic—it’s a call to action.

Let’s talk masculinity

If you’re in Toronto, there’s an event happening you need to know about. On October 18, Movember is hosting an in-person event that includes a panel-style discussion with some incredible panelists and moderated by yours truly.

Among the speakers include:

  • Tychon Carter, public speaker and the first black winner of Big Brother Canada.
  • Dr. Ellen Choi, an Assistant Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University who’s research examines employee mental health and well being.
  • JP Saxe, the Grammy nominated and JUNO winning singer songwriter who’s music has been streamed over a billion times and uses his platform to spread positivity.

The event will take place at the Globe and Mail Centre on Friday October 18 at 11:30am. Admission is free and tickets can be reserved on a first come first serve basis here.

The global health crisis for men

Movember’s mission revolves around the stark statistics surrounding men’s health:

  • Prostate Cancer: Every year, over 1.4 million men are diagnosed globally, with the numbers expected to rise to 2.3 million by 2040. In Canada, prostate cancer remains the most common cancer in men. Shockingly, 4,708 men lost their lives to this disease in 2022—nearly 13 per day.
  • Testicular Cancer: This cancer predominantly affects younger men, and it is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men aged 15-40. In 2022, 39 Canadian men died from testicular cancer, a fact made more troubling by how unaware many men are about this disease. Research shows that 75% of Canadian men aged 15-40 don’t know that it’s the most common cancer in young men, and 1 in 4 have never checked themselves for irregularities.
  • Mental Health and Suicide: Mental health is another critical area of focus. Men are significantly more likely to die by suicide than women, with over two-thirds of global suicides being male. Indigenous and Inuit men face even higher risks, with suicide rates nearly nine times higher for Inuit men compared to the rest of the population. In Canada, stress levels are particularly high in men aged 35-49, with 27.1% reporting that most days are stressful.

How to get involved

Movember offers a variety of ways to participate in their mission to improve men’s health:

  1. Grow a Mo: One of the most iconic symbols of Movember is the moustache. By growing out facial hair for the month of November, participants spark conversations about men’s health and raise funds. It’s a simple, visible way to show support.
  2. MOVE for Movember: Movember’s physical challenge encourages participants to stay active throughout the month. By setting physical goals, participants can promote both physical and mental health while raising money for the cause.
  3. Host an Event: Hosting a fundraiser or event is another powerful way to get involved. Whether it’s a fun run, a charity dinner, or a virtual gathering, events provide an opportunity to bring people together, raise awareness, and collect donations.
  4. Donate: Even if you’re not growing a moustache or participating in a MOVE challenge, you can still make an impact by donating. Every dollar raised helps fund critical research and support services for men facing cancer, mental health challenges, and more.

Why men’s health needs urgent attention

Movember’s work is more important than ever as men’s health statistics continue to reveal an urgent need for change. Prostate cancer cases are expected to double globally by 2040, making early detection and treatment essential. Movember stresses the importance of talking to your doctor and understanding your personal risk factors to catch the disease early.

For testicular cancer, many young men remain unaware of the risks. Movember encourages men to “know what’s normal” by regularly checking themselves for any changes. Early detection is key to improving survival rates for both prostate and testicular cancer.

When it comes to mental health, Movember emphasizes the need to “spot the signs” and encourage open dialogue. Whether it’s reaching out to a friend, family member, or colleague, talking about mental health struggles can be lifesaving. Movember aims to break the stigma that keeps many men silent about their mental health challenges and prevent avoidable deaths.

Join the “Mo”vement

Movember isn’t just about raising funds; it’s about saving lives and ensuring men live longer, healthier, and happier lives. You can make a difference by signing up at Movember.com and choosing how you’ll contribute—whether by growing a moustache, taking on a MOVE challenge, or hosting a fundraiser.
