In a major development for Canada’s expanding luxury market, TimeVallée has opened its first flagship store at Montreal’s highly anticipated Royalmount shopping centre. This store marks TimeVallée’s debut in Canada and its 50th boutique worldwide, signifying the brand’s commitment to broadening its international presence. In partnership with Maison Birks, a Canadian luxury icon, TimeVallée offers a curated selection of prestigious watch brands, blending rich heritage with modern craftsmanship.

Jean-Christophe Bédos, President and CEO of Birks Group, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership: “We’re thrilled to bring something entirely new to the Canadian market. TimeVallée offers an international luxury watch experience that is perfectly aligned with the growing demand for high-end retail in Canada. With Royalmount poised to become a major luxury destination, we’re confident that TimeVallée will help solidify that status.”

For Emmanuel Perrin, CEO of TimeVallée and Head of Specialist Watchmakers Distribution, running Richemont’s Specialist Watchmaker’s Maisons, the expansion into Canada was a natural progression: “Canada is a market we’ve had our eye on for some time, and partnering with Birks made perfect sense for us. We’ve had a longstanding relationship with Maison Birks through several of our brands, which allowed us to hit the ground running. This Montreal boutique is just the beginning, and we have exciting plans for the future.”

A global gateway to luxury watchmaking: TimeVallée

Founded in Switzerland, TimeVallée, a Richemont brand, is renowned for offering an immersive and educational luxury watch retail experience. Unlike traditional mono-brand boutiques, TimeVallée brings together over 30 prestigious watch Maisons under one roof. The Montreal boutique includes iconic brands such as Baume & Mercier, Cartier, Chopard, Grand Seiko, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Panerai, and Piaget, making it a destination for both seasoned collectors and newcomers to the world of luxury watches.

The store’s design plays a crucial role in creating an inviting and luxurious atmosphere. The 2,800 sq. ft. space at Royalmount is inspired by the curves of Swiss valleys, with a colour palette of golden and champagne hues that reflect the elegance and craftsmanship of the watches. Each brand has its own dedicated space within the store, allowing customers to explore the unique heritage of each Maison.

The future of Canada’s luxury market

The opening of TimeVallée at Royalmount is part of a broader effort to elevate Canada’s luxury shopping landscape. With other high-end brands like Rolex (operated by Raffi Jewellers), Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Saint Laurent, Sandro, Versace and more, are also setting up shop at Royalmount, this new shopping centre is expected to rival Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre as a key luxury hub. For Montreal, Royalmount represents a significant leap forward in the city’s ability to attract high-end retailers and cater to the growing demand for luxury goods.

“Royalmount is a game changer for Montreal,” said Bédos. “It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally seeing the infrastructure that high-end brands need to thrive in Canada. We believe this will become a focal point for luxury shopping not just in Montreal, but across the country.”

Bédos emphasized that Canada’s shifting demographics are driving the demand for luxury products. “Canada’s population is growing by about a million people a year, and many of these new Canadians come from countries where luxury shopping is part of their lifestyle. We’re seeing increased demand for high-end products, and TimeVallée is well-positioned to meet that demand.”

Looking ahead: Expanding TimeVallée’s presence in Canada

The Montreal boutique may be TimeVallée’s first Canadian location, but it certainly won’t be the last. TimeVallée has ambitious plans for the Canadian market, with the next store set to open at Vancouver’s Oakridge Centre in 2025. Perrin noted, “This is just the beginning for TimeVallée in Canada. We’re excited to bring our unique approach to other cities and continue building relationships with Canadian luxury consumers.”

Over the last couple of years I’ve had the opportunity to travel to some incredible destinations across the globe. From Nassau to Barcelona and Reykjavik in between, I’ve gotten my share of nature and urban cities. But nothing prepared me for the natural wonders and beauty that lay in my own Canadian backyard. But for this adventure, I wanted to push myself further—to navigate these raw landscapes and truly experience the wilderness. So it was only fitting that my adventure to the picturesque Canadian outdoors came at the invitation of Citizen Watch Canada, a brand synonymous with pushing boundaries. The task was straightforward…to go beyond. To go further.

Arriving at CMH Bugaboos Lodge

The Canadian Rockies stretch across western Canada, their jagged peaks rising like ancient guardians of the wild. For adventurers, this is sacred ground—a place where nature’s beauty and power come together in awe-inspiring harmony. Equipped with my gear, a sense of excitement, and a solid companion—my Citizen Promaster Skyhawk A-T, I was ready for whatever the Rockies had in store. The watch wasn’t just a style choice; it was an essential part of my expedition.

My journey started at the highly regarded CMH Bugaboos Lodge. As the helicopter descended toward the lodge, nestled deep in the heart of the Bugaboo Provincial Park, my anticipation surged. The lodge itself felt like something out of a dream, tucked into the base of towering granite spires that reached toward the sky. It’s one of the most remote and exclusive lodges in the Rockies, renowned for its luxury and proximity to some of the most breathtaking terrain in the world.

I stepped off the helicopter into the crisp, cool mountain air. Immediately, the grandeur of the landscape hit me—soaring glaciers, pristine valleys, and rugged mountain faces. The Bugaboos are famous for their remoteness, but the lodge itself offered a cozy haven with the finest amenities. After a hearty meal and orientation with our guides, I prepared for the first adventure—a trek across the terrain. Back into the heli we went and up and away but despite how much higher we climbed, the peaks didn’t get that much smaller. A reminder of how big they are and more importantly, how small we really are.

Heli hiking

I recall stepping out of the chopper on top of the mountain, getting my bearings (heli’s take a few trips to adjust to) and now I was ready. The group that had arrived prior to mine was already taking selfies, videos and producing a particular tik tok trend. It wasn’t until I looked in the opposite direction that I stopped in my tracks and lost my words. As a podcaster, you never lose your words. It was like something I’d seen on computer screensavers as a kid. Breathtaking.

After snapping some photos and some vids, so I can show off on my socials of course, it was time to go on our first official trek. My guide Roko, of whom no amount of description could do justice to the character that he is, decided for the “fast” group, he was going to run. I thought he was joking. Roko started running. First lesson.

I must also admit, I didn’t realize how much harder it is to run at that altitude and suddenly I questioned my decision to have that extra loaf of bread. Rookie mistake. Second lesson. After stopping to take in the epic views at the top of our trek, we noticed a natural lake built into the mountains at a distance. One we’d visit a few days later. But the main lesson of the day was one I’d never forget. Stand a full body’s length away from the edge. Because if you’re too close and you find yourself losing your footing, well… “you’re fucking golden” as Roko would say.

A reliable companion: The Citizen Promaster Skyhawk A-T

I’ve been on several brand trips before and the ones that stand out are the ones that put the product to the test in the environment they are meant to be in. So before setting out, I took a moment to check my Citizen Promaster Skyhawk A-T. This beautifully crafted piece of wristwear was to be my companion for the trip. The Eco-Drive technology was especially useful, as it runs on light, meaning I didn’t have to worry about charging or changing batteries—an essential feature for a multi-day mountain adventure. With its super titanium case, it remained lightweight but durable, ensuring that it could withstand any accidental knocks, and believe me, there were several. It felt like I was wearing more than just a watch, it was a swiss-army knife on my wrist and I was prepared to take on the challenges ahead.

Promasters in the wild

It’s not everyday you get to trek through the Canadian rockies at crazy high altitudes with beautiful scenery. It’s even less likely you’ll get to do it while surrounded by some of the world’s greatest adventure seekers and trendsetters.

Let’s start by getting formal introductions out of the way. Jeff Shapiro is a wingsuit pilot…I could stop there but it goes on. He’s a rock climber and paraglider. William Drumm is a world renowned diver with significant expeditions under his belt including some work with Billie Eilish. Jody MacDonald is an award-winning adventure photographer and explorer known for capturing images off the beaten path. Finally is Will Gadd, a legendary Canadian climber, paraglider and world record holder. When you’re surrounded by this caliber of people, it’s not hard to be sucked into their world and just listen as they talk about the challenges and hurdles they’ve overcome over years of honing their craft. If these legends decided to join forces and become Promasters, it should tell you something. They embodied what Citizen stands for. Going further, deeper and beyond.

The Ascent: Climbing Through the Clouds

As we ascended higher into the Rockies, the terrain shifted from soft alpine meadows to jagged rock formations. It was tough going, but the rewards were worth it: shimmering alpine lakes that mirrored the surrounding peaks and untouched valleys. After hours of hiking, we reached a high ridge that offered unparalleled panoramic views. The horizon seemed endless, with glaciers glinting in the sunlight and distant peaks disappearing into the clouds. This was the essence of adventure—being surrounded by something far greater than yourself.

My Skyhawk, with its anti-reflective sapphire crystal dial, remained clear and readable even in the bright alpine sun. Its water resistant nature soon to be tested by mountain weather. This would later come in handy – read on to find out about an unexpected 6 hour trek in the pouring rain.

2 hours away from being 2 hours away

On what ended up being the last hike of this adventure, a group of us, guide included (Roko of course), decided to take an easy trek. One, maybe two hours of hiking before the heli would pick us back up. Except as soon as we landed and the heli flew off, there was something eerie about the clouds quickly converging over us. Not long after, downpour. Thus began what would be the most challenging part of this journey.

The only way back was through. Through the mountain wilderness, the wet ground beneath and the miserable grey that covered us. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. I wasn’t worried about the physical, it was a mental game. Can I survive unrelenting conditions with literally no escape option but the path ahead? Every so often Roko would yodel, to which I came to understand was a way to inform any nearby bears that we exist and are trekking through. Did I forget to mention bears? Roko had stopped at one point to intensely scan his surroundings before pulling out his bear spray…uh oh. Suddenly we’re all on high alert and of course in that moment my balance decided to disappear and next thing I know I’m in a pool of water.

Back up and functional, the trek continued. “How much longer?” someone dared ask. “Two hours away” Roko remarked. Except he would later state “we’re about two hours away from being two hours away” half jokingly half serious. At that point the only thing distracting the group was a debate about whether we’d prefer beautifully seasoned and tasty ribs or, my personal favourite, chicken wings back at the lodge. We need to build up a reward for the trek we were on.

By the time we finally returned to the lodge, soaked to the bones, the sun was beginning to set. The long, physically demanding day had given me a deeper appreciation for the Rockies and the unique adventure I was just on. I was miserable, I was angry but I survived. As I shed my gear and looked at the time, my Citizen Promaster Skyhawk A-T reflecting the long journey I was on, reminded me of its durability. Despite being exposed the entirety of the journey, it was the only piece of gear that went unscathed. Couldn’t say the same for my camera…or my phone.

Go beyond

The Citizen way

In 2023, I participated in a similar trip with Citizen in Nassau. We took the slogan of go deeper quite literal as we went diving with sharks in the ocean. Yes you read that right. I recall receiving the press guide with shark info and thinking to myself – it’s best not to think about it. There are brands that say they want to push the limits and then there are even fewer brands that PUSH the limits. Citizen is one of those brands.

So when Zahra Hemraj, the Director of Marketing & Data Integration, sent me a text asking me how I felt about hiking in the Rockies, I knew it was going to push my limits again. When she sent the press materials and included several pages about bear awareness…well I reminded myself it was best not to think about it. This was the adventure of a lifetime. A perfect blend of exploration, relaxation and incredible humans. Thank you Citizen, thank you Zahra, thank you to the CMH guides who made taking care of a group of first-timers look effortless.

I packed my bags, said my goodbyes and hopped onto the heli but not before one last look at the screensaver. I’ll be back soon. When I am, you can bet I’ll have my wrist gear ready to go with me.

This makes it crucial to be prepared for emergencies, and Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite feature is here to help. Available on iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2, this feature can be a lifesaver when you’re off the grid.

Your saving grace: Emergency SOS via Satellite, and how it works

Emergency SOS via Satellite is designed for those moments when you find yourself without cellular coverage and need help. It enables your iPhone or Apple Watch to connect to a satellite and send out a distress signal. This week, the feature proved its worth when an injured hiker in Victoria was rescued after her iPhone sent out a distress call via satellite .

How Emergency SOS via Satellite works

The iPhone’s Emergency SOS via satellite feature, introduced with the iPhone 14 lineup, enables users to call for help even without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. When activated, an easy-to-use interface guides the user to connect to a satellite and complete a short questionnaire designed with emergency experts to relay vital information to dispatchers. This includes the user’s location, situation, iPhone battery level, and Medical ID, if enabled. The message is sent via satellite to dispatchers or relay centers staffed by Apple-trained specialists. Users can also share their location via satellite through the Find My app, and practice using the demo mode without contacting emergency services.

Apple’s development of custom components and software allows the iPhone 14 to connect to satellite frequencies without a bulky antenna. A text compression algorithm reduces message size, enabling messages to be sent and received in as little as 15 seconds in clear conditions. This feature is crucial for those in remote areas or affected by disasters, providing essential connectivity to emergency services. The satellite connection also works with other safety features like Crash Detection and Fall Detection, enhancing user safety during emergencies.

Setting up Emergency SOS

To use Emergency SOS via Satellite, you don’t need to do much setup. On your iPhone 14 or 15, simply follow these steps:

1. Access Settings: Open the Settings app on your device.
2. Emergency SOS: Tap on ‘Emergency SOS.’
3. Enable Emergency SOS via Satellite: Follow the on-screen instructions to ensure the feature is activated.

For Apple Watch Ultra 2 users, the setup is just as straightforward:

1. Open Settings: Navigate to the Settings app on your watch.
2. Emergency SOS: Select ‘Emergency SOS.’
3. Activate Satellite SOS: Follow the prompts to enable the feature.

It’s an excellent way to understand how the feature works before you need it in a real emergency.

Latest added feature in iOS 18: Emergency SOS Live Video

Allowing users provide context to emergency services by sharing live streaming video and recorded media. During an emergency call, dispatchers can now request to view live video or media from the user’s camera roll via a secure connection, facilitating quicker and more efficient assistance.

Using the Compass app

In addition to Emergency SOS, Apple devices offer several other tools to enhance your safety during outdoor adventures. The Compass app on the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is a perfect example. This app helps you keep track of your route, ensuring you can navigate back to your starting point if you get lost.

Tracking your route

The Compass app allows you to track your route and add waypoints, which are markers that help you remember specific locations. Here’s how to use it:

1. Open Compass: Access the Compass app on your Apple Watch.
2. Add Waypoints: Tap the ‘Add Waypoint’ button to mark your current location.
3. Navigate Back: Use the ‘Backtrack’ feature to trace your steps back to your starting point.

By adding waypoints and using the backtrack feature, you can easily navigate unfamiliar trails and ensure you don’t get lost.

Dan Tanenbaum had been so sure his wife was pregnant with twin girls. When she delivered two sons instead, however, he knew exactly what he would do next: find a pair of classic luxury watches to give them on their 21^st birthdays. And one of them, he decided, would be a very particular vintage Rolex. 

If anyone understands the value of Rolex and what makes it a status symbol, it’s Tanenbaum. A Toronto-based businessman-turned artist, he’s not only a watch collector but creates sculptures by encrusting Air Jordans, toys and other objects with vintage watch parts. That means he can appreciate a wide variety of timepieces, even if he recognizes the prestige that a Rolex Submariner continues to convey. 

“I hate that I love Rolex the way I do,” he says with a laugh. “I don’t like going out for lunch and see that everyone is wearing a Submariner. It’s almost too easy. But I can respect it. I really think everything about the Submariner is perfection, on so many levels.”

A crown for every achievement

Tanenbaum is hardly alone. Since its inception in 1910 by founder, Hans Wilsdorf, Rolex has achieved one milestone after another, from the first waterproof wristwatch in 1926 to the self-winding Perpetual rotor a few years later. More recently, Rolex’s focus on performance, power and precision timing has been codified in its in-house Superlative Chronometer certification. 

The results of these efforts have made Rolex not only an instantly recognizable name, but a favourite of celebrities ranging from Robert Redford to David Beckham. According to Tanenbaum, however, the source of Rolex’s popularity can be largely attributed to the world’s best-known secret agent. 

“The brand was really elevated by James Bond,” he says, referencing the Submariner Reference 6538 worn by Sean Connery in 1962’s Dr. No. “That was a turning point. Now it’s an aspirational brand – you get one after you land your first job, or someone might give it as a wedding gift. And people can take a watch like that through their entire life.”

In fact, Tanenbaum’s quest following the birth of his boys led him to a fellow collector who had a Submariner 6538 locked in a safety deposit box. After some wooing, he not only convinced the owner to part with the watch but write a letter to his son capturing its provenance. It’s too long to reprint in full, but the last paragraph approaches poetry: “God winds our hearts but once – just how tightly is his secret. I hope you spend your time wisely and that your deeds carry both you and the lives you touch to great and wonderful places.”)

Where the iconic meets the unexpected

This is just one example of the lengths people go to acquire a Rolex. A more controversial case came up when police raided the residence of Peruvian president Dina Boluarte in search of Rolex watches that allegedly cost far more than her salary. 

Another testament to Rolex’s success is its relative ambivalence to the digital revolution. Rolex.org only launched in 2018, and the brand’s focus has been largely on enhancing the way it can showcase its watches in brick-and-mortar settings. Last year, for instance, Rolex acquired Bucherer AG, one of the most rarified luxury watch retailers in the world. 

Closer to home, late last year Rolex opened an immersive, 2,250 square foot boutique in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood with Royal de Versailles Jewellers (following one of the largest in North America opening in Vancouver in 2016). With an exterior built from digitally fabricated limestones whose columns are intended to recall the patterns of a watch’s band links, the boutique offers custom displays for both personal and private shopping.

If you decide to spring for a Rolex, it’s not necessarily hard to maintain its value. Tanenbaum recommends simply ensuing it gets serviced regularly, making sure that key parts like the hands or the bezel aren’t replaced. There’s also no need to “ice out” a Rolex by adding diamonds to it, he argues. And don’t throw out the papers that come with the watch, which can provide important details you may need. 

When you truly love a timepiece, it shows. Maybe one aspect of the Rolex’s staying power is that its eye-catching design not only impresses other people, but makes you want to become a collector yourself. 

Unlike a smartwatch, which is really just another digital device, a luxury wristwatch is based on the kind of craftsmanship that turns an everyday possession into an heirloom. For people like Tanenbaum, a Rolex reflects the ideal that inspires a desire for more.

“I wish I had more wrists,” he says.
