It wasn’t where you’d expect to find a Porsche parked. Earlier this summer I had spent too long wandering Toronto’s Queen St. West, and dove into a nondescript diner specializing in cheese steak in a state of desperate hunger. Only when I glanced up from my meal did I notice the car out front. 

There it was: the shield with the rearing horse over fields of red and gold, an emblem that hasn’t changed all that much since its debut in 1952. In this case, though, the logo was on the driver’s side door. 

After I finished eating I walked around the vehicle, which was clearly driven by employees working at a dealership. It was hardly the best advertisement for the top-ranked premium car of 2024 by J.D. Power. What is it about a Porsche that still carries such cachet – especially after the better part of eight decades?

A luxury vehicle that fuels ‘social acceptance’

Forget about fuel efficiency, engine horsepower or any of the other specs. According to the brand, what the most important thing Porsche provides its owners is social acceptance, a benefit that puts the vehicle on a level with things we care about most: 

Those who enjoy social acceptance experience sustained, positive support from those around them. The need for social acceptance influences many major decisions in our lives: Whom we marry. The career we choose. Whether we buy a Porsche 911 Turbo S.

To some extent, you could credit a great deal of Porsche’s social acceptance to Tom Cruise. In his breakout 1983 film Risky Business, it was his character Joel who cemented the brand’s status with the line, “Porsche. There is no substitute” as he stole his father’s car for a joyride. 

Porsche has continued to make pit stops in pop culture ever since, from Weekend at Bernie’s to Legally Blonde. Along the way, something curious happened: what began as a sports car founder Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche built primarily for his own purposes evolved into a luxury brand. 

The definitive proof came just a few years ago, when Brand Finance put Porsche’s value above Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel and Hermes. On a less tangible level, you could see its status rising with the popularity of bumper stickers that joked “My other car is a Porsche.” It didn’t hurt that its circle of owners came to include tastemakers like Ralph Lauren and celebrity car enthusiasts like Jerry Seinfeld. 

Porsche has been able to tap into the aspirations of people who might never buy its vehicles (but talk enthusiastically about them) by opening what it calls Porsche Experience Centres. The next Canadian location, which is set to open in Durham region this fall, will offer Porsche-curious visitors a closeup look at its cars’vehicle dynamics, technology and a two-kilometre driving circuit. 

“Driven by Dreams”: Celebrating 75 years of Porsche

Porsche’s journey began in 1948 with the creation of the 356, a modest sports car that paved the way for one of the most recognizable brands in automotive history. Over the decades, Porsche built a reputation not just for performance but for embodying luxury and aspiration. From its starring roles in pop culture to its status among tastemakers, Porsche’s appeal has transcended the track.

In 2023, Porsche marked its 75th anniversary, celebrating milestones in engineering and design that have defined the brand. In 2024, Porsche honoured the 50th anniversary of its Turbo, a game-changing innovation in performance cars, with events and special editions that underscored the technology’s enduring impact. These anniversaries show how Porsche balances tradition and innovation, keeping its iconic status alive.

Where Porsche is headed next

The challenge with a brand like Porsche, and especially signature models like the 911, is that they need to continue developing. Even the company’s own chief designer worries the vehicle has gotten too big. The plus side is that with additional size comes more capacity for innovation: witness the forthcoming 2025 Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid First Drive, which is already drawing raves for its unique approach to electrification. 

During a recent lap on Germany’s famed Nürburgring race track, meanwhile, the Porsche Panamera set a new speed record in the “executive segment. Even when its cars aren’t moving people are impressed: a prototype Porsche Taycan also set a record for its wireless charging speed. 

These kinds of details matter, because a great car has to have more than a beautiful design, movie credits and celebrities who take the wheel. Porsche’s popularity will only stay in high gear if it continues to prove there is as much to admire under the hood as there is with the naked eye.

The mega movie of the summer is almost here and Ryan Reynolds’ latest nine-figure investment, €200m to be exact, unveiled a new special edition model. Alpine F1 has released a special edition livery in honour of Deadpool & Wolverine which hits theatres this Friday, or Thursday if you’re like me and you got the early screening tickets (don’t worry I won’t spoil anything). The car will be used in this weekend’s upcoming Belgian Grand Prix where drivers Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon will drive the cars in a nod to both Marvel superheroes.

Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool and Wolverine is the third installment in the the popular Deadpool franchise and since formally coming over to Marvel, the films have only gotten bigger as it seeks to introduce more characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film introduces fan favourite Wolverine into the film although don’t get it confused, this is not the same Wolverine from previous films as this version is a variant from an alternative timeline. If that’s confusing you, you’re probably not the only one.

Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman take over Toronto

The Hollywood superstars, along with director Shawn Levy, were in Toronto yesterday (July 23) as part of their ongoing press tour to promote the film. The trio took over as fans lined up for hours waiting to catch a glimpse of the actors.

Maserati’s storied racing history comes alive with the introduction of the MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda, two Special Series vehicles created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Trident’s return to competition. In 2004, after a 37-year hiatus, Maserati re-entered the racing scene with the iconic and victorious MC12. The MC12, initially launched as a road version, quickly became a benchmark in GT championships. Its legacy inspired the Maserati MC20 super sports car, which marked the beginning of a new era for the brand in 2020. The MC20 was the first model equipped with the innovative V6 Nettuno engine, embodying Maserati’s commitment to performance and engineering excellence.

Maserati: Honouring a legacy with exclusive editions

The Maserati MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda are set to be offered in a limited edition of 20 units each, featuring special liveries and exclusive content inspired by the MC12 Stradale and MC12 GT1 Vitaphone, respectively.

The Maserati MC20 Icona’s livery pays homage to one of the most iconic Maseratis ever. The colours mirror those of its 2004 predecessor, the MC12 Stradale, a tribute to the Maserati Trofeo Light which ran in the 24 Hours of Daytona and was inspired by the Maserati Birdcage Type 61.

Several features from the Fuoriserie Personalisation Program are included in the MC20 Icona Bianco Audace Matte and Blu Stradale livery. Notable details include the Maserati Fuoriserie logo in Bianco Audace on the side panels near the rear wheels and the Italian flag logo on the door under the MC20 lettering. The chrome-plated wheels feature the Trident design, with silver hubcaps and contrasting blue Trident logos. The brake calipers are painted blue, the mirrors come with an auto-dimming feature, and the engine cover is made of carbon fiber.

MC20 Leggenda: A tribute to racing

The MC20 Leggenda’s history is reflected in its name. Its livery in Nero Essenza and Digital Mint Matte echoes the unmistakable colors of the award-winning MC12 GT1 under the Vitaphone Racing team. This legendary car achieved three victories and two runner-up finishes at the 24 Hours of Spa.

The Fuoriserie features of the MC20 Leggenda include trident wheels in Nero Lucido with Nero Opaco and Trident Digital Mint hubcaps. The Trident logo appears in yellow on the grille, doors, and C-pillar, with brake calipers painted black.

Both the MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda feature racing interiors with lightweight 4-way monocoque racing seats. The Icona has a central section in Nero/Blu on a silver background, while the Leggenda has Nero on a silver background. Trident embroidery adorns the headrests along with the words “Icona” or “Leggenda,” depending on the model. The cover over the powerful Nettuno engine boasts a badge with the wording “ICONA. UNA DI 20” or “LEGGENDA. UNA DI 20.”

The sophisticated Sonus faber sound system, carbon fiber interior package, electronic limited-slip differential (E-LSD), suspension lifter, blind spot, and rear cross path systems, as well as mats in the front and boot, are features shared by both versions.

Celebrating two decades

The MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda celebrate the 20th anniversary of a golden age for Maserati on the track. Between 2004 and 2010, the MC12 GT1 achieved 27 victories in the FIA GT Championships, three wins at the 24 Hours of Spa, six Teams’ championships with Vitaphone Racing, five Drivers’ championships – including two FIA GT1 World Championships – and two Constructors’ championships for Maserati.

The 2004 MC12 Stradale, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and powered by a Ferrari-derived V12 engine, remains the fastest production car Maserati has ever produced. With a top speed of 330 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 in 3.8 seconds, only 50 units were made.

Today, the legacy of those triumphs and the spirit of excellence is reflected in the MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda, representing a passing of the baton to a new generation of Maserati enthusiasts.

A new vision for automotive retail

Hosted at the newly renovated Mercedes-Benz Silver Star facility, the event provided a sneak peek into the future of automotive retail. The state-of-the-art 36,000 square foot showroom on Decarie Blvd showcases the brand’s commitment to merging personal connections with advanced digital touchpoints. This facility will soon house the AMG Brand Centre, a 20,000 square foot dedicated space for the high-performance Mercedes-AMG brand, making it only the second in Canada and the eleventh globally.

George Russell: From dreams to reality

He recalled the pivotal moment at 16 when he realized the need to actively pursue his dreams: “When I was at a young age, I thought I could just go out there, win races, and one day become a Formula One driver. It was only when I was 16 that I recognized I needed to make this happen for myself. Nobody’s just going to knock on my door. I’ve got to go and knock on their door.”

Russell’s proactive approach led him to email Toto Wolff, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS’s team principal. “I sent an email to Toto when I was 16, saying I’d love to meet you one day, to just have a discussion about the future and get your advice on a few things. That’s when we had our first meeting. I had a PowerPoint presentation prepared of why I should be a driver for Mercedes and here we are ten years later.”

Russell also highlighted the importance of mental health: “Talking with a professional was a real game changer for me. It not only helped with my performance on track but also just to live a happier life. We’re living this dream, going around 20 different countries, driving the fastest cars in the world in front of millions of fans, and you feel like you should be happy every single day. But sometimes you’re not, and you ask yourself, why is this? The body’s undertaking so much pressure that you go through, and it’s this emotional roller coaster. Since having that chance to talk with a professional, I’ve learned so much about myself and how to deal with these situations.”

When asked about advice for young people chasing their dreams, Russell shared: “The advice I would give to my younger self, and to any young individual aspiring to pursue their dreams, is to continue to work hard. You’ve got to put in that dedication. It doesn’t matter if you want to be a Formula One driver, a football player, or whatever it may be, you’ve got to keep on pursuing and never give up. Those core values go so far in life.”

Quebec’s Mikaël Grenier and Stevens Dorcelus also inspired the youth with their stories of perseverance and passion. Grenier, a Mercedes-AMG Performance Driver, emphasized the importance of passion and persistence: “Achieving my dream of being signed by Mercedes-AMG as a professional driver didn’t come easy.
