While most of us were sitting back enjoying a cold Coors Light on Sunday evening, Usher was prepping for the performance of a lifetime. One that will go down in history, in homage to the black artists that came before him. The performance ultimately featured a range of artists from his past including Ludacris, Lil Jon and Alicia Keys and was one to remember.

Throwback

When Usher kicked off his Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII halftime show performance with ‘Caught Up’, we knew it was going to be an ode to Usher when he was king of the world. It’s been nearly two decades since most of the mega hits but Usher’s style and moves are timeless. His ability to perform not just at the mic but with his feet remains captivating all these years later. What he also does is pay homage to Black artists who came before him and helped shape the career he built. The R&B star said as much in an interview with Good Morning America back on February 2.

Non-belieber

When people found out that Usher was performing at the Super Bowl naturally everyone started speculating who would join him on stage. A popular theory was that Usher would bring on Justin Bieber. After all, it would only make sense considering the role Usher played in Bieber’s career and let’s not forget about their song Somebody to Love. The Super Bowl would have been a great time for Bieber to announce he is possibly ready to start performing full-time again but sadly Beliebers were disappointed when the camera panned to Bieber and his wife Hailey Bieber sitting on the sidelines. A damper on the performance? Slightly, but not the end of the world.

The fits

Usher made a splash with his wardrobe during the Super Bowl halftime show. Starting with a custom Dolce and Gabbana wool coat adorned with Swarovski crystals, pearls, and intricate motifs, he then transitioned into an asymmetrical bomber jacket with a dazzling phoenix pin, layered over sculptural pants.

The third look featured a Swarovski-crystal-embroidered vest atop a Marcello ribbed tank top. Usher’s grand finale included a bespoke Off-White ensemble, a fusion of five pieces adorned with a staggering 394,000 crystals, perfectly capturing the high-energy “roller-cross” essence of his performance at Allegiant Stadium. The Off White team worked with costume designer Tanja Caldwell, fashion director Brooklyn Styles, and creative director Aakomon Jones on the singers’ looks.

Overall, the Super Bowl came as advertised and the half time show continues to be among the top topics leading up to and afterwards. Usher gave us a trip down memory lane and we’re not complaining, in fact, quite the opposite. The legendary quarterback, Joseph Clifford Montana Jr., is an American former football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 16 seasons. Most of those were with one half of this year’s Super Bowl contenders, the San Francisco 49ers. Nicknamed “Joe Cool” and “the Comeback Kid”, Montana is widely considered as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Essentially, goat status.

Rematch

The Chiefs, led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the 49ers, led by quarterback Brock Purdy, are set to face off in a rematch from the 2020 Super Bowl where Mahomes and the Chiefs took top honours. For anyone keeping score, this is the second straight year and the fourth time in five seasons the Kansas City Chiefs are heading to the Super Bowl. An incredible feat on its own.

Half-Time Show

Of course the Super Bowl half-time show is always one of the premier events of the year, almost as big as the game in some respects but don’t tell that to the die-hard football fans. Headlining this year’s performance is the legendary artist Usher, who currently has a residency in Las Vegas. Among the other performers include Tiesto and Post Malone who will be singing in pre-game festivities. Yes, Taylor Swift will also be in attendance as she cheers on Travis Kelce.

Allegiant Stadium

The backdrop to the spectacle will be none other than Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders. Las Vegas has been busy these last few months as it’s coming off a wildly successful inaugural Formula 1 (F1) race and is now working towards the very first Super Bowl in Las Vegas history. Between the stars and the thousands of fans flocking into the city, it should be a day/night to remember for all.

Las Vegas knows how to throw a party, and the Formula 1 race weekend will be no exception. Among the series of events includes the NFL Draft as well as the NCAA Final Four in 2028. But more closer on the horizon could be the introduction of a Major League Baseball team (MLB). “The next step for us is looking at the A’s baseball wise. There’s a site identified that will host 30,000 seats.” There’s been discussions around Oakland relocating to Las Vegas following in the footsteps of their NFL counterparts. All to say that if Las Vegas wasn’t already on your list of places to visit, you most definitely should put it up there.

But over the last several years, investments into stadiums, facilities and more has changed the way people look at Las Vegas. Vegas Golden Knights

Can a game played on ice survive in the dessert? The answer is a resounding yes. When the NHL expanded into Las Vegas with the Vegas Golden Knights franchise, many expected it to fail. Instead, the expansion team did what no other in history has done. It went on a run to the Stanley Cup Finals igniting what the city seems to have already known, Vegas is a sports hub for every type of fan.

Las Vegas Raiders

So it was not long afterwards that the NFL, taking notice of what the NHL accomplished, decided to move the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas and built the incredible Allegiant Stadium.

Gent’s Post had a chance to tour the stadium including an opportunity to step onto the gridiron and it’s an awe inspiring piece of architecture. What’s more, Allegiant Stadium will be the host site of the 2024 Super Bowl.

Ultimate Fighting Champion

Known for its infamous years hosting boxing matches, it’s no surprise that when the UFC comes into town, Las Vegas goes wild. Taking in the sights and sounds of UFC 285, it’s easy to see the roaring response to combat sports. The fans are loud, the celebrities out in full force and the show is primed. Even Jake Gyllenhaal made a special appearance as he filmed scenes from his new movie between matches.

Formula 1

In case you haven’t heard, Las Vegas will host its first ever F1 race November 16-18 2023 and construction is well underway. Red Bull, Mercedes and many others will be zipping around the strip as the lights and sounds magnify what will be the city’s most ambitious spectacle yet.

Ultimately, Las Vegas will always have the appeal of food, shows and nightlife, but you can now add sporting venues at the top of that list.

In 1967, for the first Super Bowl, the NFL wanted to think big. To crown the champion in a way so strong, so forceful, and so important that it would properly dignify the winners for years on end. And so, a reliable, iconic, legendary company must design the trophy, the won that would be presented annually to the Super Bowl winners. Who but Tiffany & Co. fits the bill?

About Tiffany & Co.’s design

Featuring a regulation-sized football in a kicking position, the 22-inch Super Bowl trophy (which was renamed the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 1970, after the legendary Green Bay Packers coach) is crafted from sterling silver and weighs in at seven pounds. “It was initially designed by Oscar Riedener, a former Vice President at Tiffany & Co., who sketched the basic design on a napkin during a 1966 meeting with then-NFL® commissioner, Pete Rozelle,” according to a Tiffany & Co. press release.  

In preparation for the yearly award, the trophy is handcrafted at the Tiffany hollowware workshop in Cumberland, Rhode Island, using artisan techniques like silversmithing, spinning, chasing, hand-engraving and polishing. The entire process takes about four months, and a total of a whopping 72 hours of labour. The brand also creates the AFC and NFC trophies, awarded to the leaders in both division every single year.

In 1991, Tiffany’s role in the Super Bowl trophies expanded, creating the Pete Rozelle Trophy, which is given to the Super Bowl MVP every year. The result is the award clutched by winners every February, including last year’s recipients, the Los Angeles Rams. Tom Brady holds the record and has won the Super Bowl seven times.

This year, the two teams vying for Tiffany’s Vince Lombardi Trophy are the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. The game takes place on February 12 at 6:30 p.m., and the halftime show concert will be performed by Rihanna.
